The Trip Planning Magazine to Japan

Why choose a cruise in Japan to explore the archipelago?

Japan has over 14,000 islands, and this is precisely what makes cruising so relevant for discovering it. Navigating between ports allows you to move from a large metropolis to a preserved coastal village without ever having to handle connections or transfers. Each stop reveals a different facet of the country: the urban frenzy of Tokyo, the serenity of Kyoto's gardens, the memory of Hiroshima, or the turquoise waters of Okinawa.

This mode of travel also offers considerable comfort: the ship becomes your base, and you just have to let yourself be carried from one port to another. It's an effective and enjoyable way to cover great distances while fully enjoying each stage. For those who want to go further, some routes extend the adventure to South Korea or Taiwan, further enriching the journey.

Choosing the right period is essential to get the most out of your trip. Here is an overview of the seasons to plan your Japan cruise:

Season Period Conditions Highlights
Spring March – May Mild, sunny Cherry blossoms, hanami festivals
Summer June – August Hot and humid Matsuri, islands of Okinawa
Autumn September – November Pleasant, colorful Red foliage, hiking
Winter December – February Cool to cold Snowy landscapes, onsen

Spring remains the most favored season: cherry blossoms transform parks and seashores into ephemeral tableaux of striking beauty. Autumn, on the other hand, is appealing for its flamboyant colors and a more serene atmosphere.

What are the must-see stops during your cruise in Japan?

From Tokyo to the southern islands, cruises in Japan offer itineraries of remarkable richness. Here are the stops that deserve special attention, according to your desires and the duration of your stay.

Tokyo and Yokohama, gateways to the Land of the Rising Sun

Most cruises offer a departure from Tokyo or Yokohama, its main port located about thirty kilometers south of the capital. The adventure begins from these two cities, and they are worth several days of exploration.

Tokyo fascinates with its contrasts: the Meiji Shrine, nestled in a forest in the heart of the city, adjoins the neon lights of Shibuya and the bustling lanes of Asakusa. Tsukiji Market, one of the world's largest seafood markets, is a gastronomical stop not to be missed. On a clear day, the silhouette of Mount Fuji is visible from certain viewpoints, offering a panorama worthy of the most famous Japanese prints. This iconic volcano, peaking at 3,776 meters, remains one of the most powerful symbols of Japan.

Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Osaka, between remembrance and bustling activity

From Kobe, Kyoto is accessible in less than an hour. The former imperial capital for over a thousand years, from 794 to 1868, it boasts a density of temples, shrines, and Zen gardens unparalleled in the country. Kiyomizudera Temple, perched on the heights of the city, or the Fushimi Inari Shrine with its thousands of vermilion torii, are among the World Heritage sites most visited in Japan.

Hiroshima, in turn, invites contemplation. The Atomic Bomb Dome and the Peace Memorial Park bear witness to the resilience of a city that has rebuilt itself with admirable dignity. A few kilometers away, Miyajima Island with its great torii floating on the bay offers a spiritual and natural interlude of great beauty.

Osaka closes this trio with a completely different energy: generous street food, historic castle, and the always-lit Dotonbori district.

The southern islands, between nature and exoticism

Further south, the Okinawa archipelago offers an entirely different ambiance. Crystal-clear waters, white sand beaches, and coral reefs of Ishigaki or Naha are more reminiscent of Southeast Asia than mainland Japan. It's an ideal stop for diving enthusiasts, snorkelers, or simply for lounging by the water.

At Vialala, we believe that each traveler deserves a tailored program, created with a Travel Planner expert in the destination. This local specialist assists you from the design of your stay to build a trip that truly reflects your wishes, your pace, and your interests.

Here is what our Travel Planners can personalize for you:

Whether you're traveling as a couple, with family, or friends, Vialala builds an unforgettable experience for you, far from fixed formulas. Every detail is thought out so that your trip to the Land of the Rising Sun truly matches you.

FAQ Japan

What is the best time to go on a cruise in Japan?

Spring, between March and May, is the most favored season thanks to the cherry blossoms and mild temperatures. Autumn, from September to November, also offers ideal conditions with colorful landscapes and quieter attendance. These two seasons are particularly suited for shore excursions and long walks in Japanese cities.

How long does a cruise in Japan generally last?

Cruises in Japan typically last between 8 and 14 days, depending on the number of stops and the extent of the itinerary. Shorter circuits, from 5 to 7 days, focus on a specific region like the Okinawa islands or the Tokyo-Osaka axis. Our Travel Planners can also offer to combine a cruise with a land stay to extend the adventure.

Do you need a visa to embark on a cruise to Japan?

French nationals do not need a visa to enter Japan for a tourist stay of less than 90 days. A valid passport is sufficient. If your itinerary includes other countries such as South Korea or Taiwan, it is advisable to check the entry conditions specific to each destination before your departure.
