Why choose a personalized stay in Nara?

The first imperial capital of Japan from 710 to 794, Nara embodies the very essence of Japanese spirituality. This exceptional destination deserves much more than a simple day trip from Kyoto or Osaka. A customized trip to Nara allows you to explore this museum-city in depth, where 8 UNESCO World Heritage sites coexist harmoniously with over 1,200 free-roaming sacred deer.

Unlike standard tours that only allocate a few hours to this wonder, your personalized stay in Nara gives you the opportunity to truly immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of the former capital. Our Travel Planners design your itinerary based on your specific interests: whether you're a Buddhist architecture enthusiast, a photography aficionado, or a traveler in search of serenity, each Nara journey becomes a tailored experience.

Nara's proximity to other jewels of Kansai also makes it an ideal base for exploring the region freely. Located just 42 kilometers from Kyoto and 35 kilometers from Osaka, this strategic position allows for enriching your trip to Japan with excursions to the Japanese Alps or other iconic destinations in the archipelago.

What to discover during your customized trip to Nara?

The ancient capital is full of treasures that justify a dedicated stay. Your personalized trip to Nara will reveal unsuspected facets of this fascinating destination.

The treasures of the World Heritage

The Todai-ji temple is undoubtedly the jewel of your visit. This architectural marvel houses the Daibutsu, a 15-meter tall bronze Buddha statue weighing 500 tons. The main hall, rebuilt in the 17th century, remains one of the largest wooden structures in the world with its 57 meters of width.

The Kasuga Taisha shrine transports you to a mystical world with its 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns lining the forest paths. Founded in 768, this sacred Shinto site organizes the Mantoro ceremony twice a year, where all the lanterns are lit simultaneously, creating a stunningly beautiful spectacle.

Your customized trip also includes the discovery of the Kofuku-ji temple and its five-story pagoda, a true emblem of the city. This elegant structure, rebuilt in 1426, is majestically reflected in the waters of the Sarusawa-ike pond during sunsets.

The Nara Park and its divine messengers

The expansive Nara Park covers 660 hectares and serves as the natural setting for these architectural marvels. More than 1,200 Sika deer roam freely here, considered according to Shinto tradition as messengers of the gods. These sacred animals, perfectly accustomed to human presence, add a uniquely poetic dimension to your exploration.

Our Travel Planners organize privileged moments for observing these graceful creatures, especially at sunrise when the morning mist envelops the park's lawns. You can also participate in the traditional feeding ritual with shika senbei, these rice cakes specially designed for the deer.

Mount Wakakusa, which dominates the park from its 342 meters of altitude, offers an exceptional panorama of the city and its surroundings. The ascent of this grassy hill, particularly spectacular during the Yamayaki in January when the dry grasses are ritually burned, constitutes a highlight of your personalized stay.

How to organize your personalized trip to Nara?

The success of your customized trip to Nara rests on careful planning adapted to your preferences and seasonality.

The best times to go

The temperate climate of Nara allows for pleasant visits throughout the year, each season revealing its particular charms:

Season Period Advantages Disadvantages
Spring March-May Cherry blossoms, mild temperatures High tourist influx
Summer June-August Traditional festivals, lush vegetation Significant heat and humidity
Autumn September-November Flamboyant maple colors, dry weather Moderate influx
Winter December-February Peaceful atmosphere, advantageous rates Cool temperatures

Our Travel Planners particularly recommend the autumn period for your Nara trip, when the foliage turns red and gold, creating a magnificent setting around the ancient temples.

Combining Nara with other destinations

Your trip to Japan can be enriched with numerous extensions from Nara. The Kansai region offers endless customization possibilities:

  • Kyoto and its 2,000 temples, 45 minutes by train;
  • Osaka and its renowned gastronomy, 1-hour journey;
  • Mount Koya and its Buddhist monasteries for an overnight temple stay;
  • Yoshino and its 30,000 cherry trees during the spring bloom.

For travelers looking to explore further into the archipelago, our experts design itineraries combining Nara with Tokyo, the Japanese Alps, or even Hiroshima. Each extension respects the desired travel pace and your specific interests.

A honeymoon in Japan can also include Nara as a romantic stage, with exclusive experiences like a private tea ceremony in a traditional pavilion or a nighttime stroll in the illuminated park.
