Tailor-made travel to Hiroshima

Hiroshima: The Iconic City of Peace

Hiroshima is not only a place of remembrance but also a tourist destination, symbolizing peace with the Peace Memorial Park and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, which attract millions of visitors each year. Indeed, when you hear "Hiroshima," you think of world war. The nuclear attack that struck this Japanese city on August 6, 1945, forever marked history.

The city, deeply affected by its past, has managed to rebuild and modernize. It is also renowned for its culinary richness, especially okonomiyaki, a type of Japanese savory pancake.

Additionally, Hiroshima offers a variety of family-friendly activities that combine culture, history, and entertainment, including visits to Asa Zoo, Miyajima Island with its floating torii gate, and Shukkei-en Garden.

Why choose Hiroshima for your trip to Japan?

Hiroshima perfectly embodies Japan's capacity to reinvent itself while preserving its memory. This city of 1.2 million inhabitants, located in the Chugoku region on Honshu Island, offers you a unique experience blending historical reflection and cultural discoveries. Your Hiroshima trip will allow you to explore a destination where the tragic past of August 6, 1945, coexists harmoniously with vibrant modernity and preserved nature.

The proximity of the sacred island of Miyajima, accessible in just 25 minutes by ferry, makes Hiroshima an ideal base for exploring one of the three most beautiful landscapes of Japan according to Japanese tradition. This unique combination of a historical city and natural sanctuary explains why our Travel Planners systematically recommend including Hiroshima in any authentic trip to Japan.

Located 1h20 from Kyoto and 1h30 from Osaka by shinkansen, Hiroshima integrates perfectly into a wider circuit. Whether you desire an emotional honeymoon or an educational family trip, this destination offers experiences suitable for all profiles of travelers.

What to discover during your personalized stay in Hiroshima?

Your tailor-made trip to Hiroshima will reveal a city with multiple facets, where each district tells a different story. Our Travel Planners have selected the essential experiences that will give meaning to your discovery.

The Peace Memorial, a testimony of history

The Peace Memorial Park is the emotional heart of your visit to Hiroshima. This 12-hectare site, designed by architect Kenzo Tange, houses several monuments dedicated to the memory of the victims. The Genbaku Dome, the only building partially preserved from the explosion, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996.

The Peace Memorial Museum will immerse you in history with a respectful and educational museography. The Flame of Peace, burning since 1964, symbolizes the city's commitment to a world without nuclear weapons. Our Travel Planners recommend planning at least 3 hours for this essential visit, preferably in the morning to avoid crowds.

Miyajima, the sacred island at the gates of Hiroshima

Your personalized trip to Hiroshima would be incomplete without discovering Miyajima, officially called Itsukushima. This 30 km² island is home to the Itsukushima Shrine, famous for its 16-meter-high vermilion torii that appears to float on the water at high tide.

Climbing Mount Misen, at 535 meters, offers an exceptional panorama of the Seto Inland Sea and its 3,000 islets. The cable car spares you a 1.5-hour hike, but those who enjoy walking will appreciate the trails through the virgin forest. The freely roaming deer add a special charm to this nature escape.

The shrine itself, founded in the 6th century, reveals its magic during traditional ceremonies. Our Travel Planners can organize your visit to coincide with morning or evening rituals, special times when the island regains its serenity.

The cultural and gastronomic treasures of the city

Beyond its tragic history, Hiroshima cultivates an authentic art of living that your tailor-made trip will allow you to appreciate. Hiroshima Castle, reconstructed identically in 1958, dominates the city from its 39 meters height. Its five floors house a museum recounting the history of the region's samurais.

The Shukkei-en gardens, created in 1620, offer a haven of peace in the heart of the metropolis. These landscaped gardens of 4 hectares reproduce famous landscapes of China and Japan in miniature, with their bridges, pavilions, and ponds populated by koi carp.

Hiroshima's gastronomy merits special attention. The local okonomiyaki, different from that of Osaka, stacks ingredients in distinct layers. The oysters from Hiroshima Bay, cultivated for más de 450 años, are enjoyed raw, grilled, or in tempura. Our Travel Planners can organize cooking classes or market tours to enrich your culinary discovery.

FAQ Hiroshima

How many days should you plan to visit Hiroshima and its surroundings?

We recommend a minimum of 3 days to discover Hiroshima and Miyajima thoroughly. A full day is enough for the Peace Memorial and the city center, while Miyajima deserves a full day with the ascent of Mount Misen. The third day allows for exploring less-known neighborhoods of Hiroshima or making an excursion to Matsue. For a more relaxed trip, 4 to 5 days offer an ideal pace.

Is the Japan Rail Pass absolutely necessary to get to Hiroshima?

The Japan Rail Pass is not mandatory but highly recommended if you are visiting multiple Japanese cities. The Tokyo-Hiroshima trip costs about 19,000 yen by shinkansen, while a 7-day JR Pass costs 29,650 yen. The pass becomes cost-effective as soon as you make a round trip between Tokyo and Hiroshima, not to mention the included local trips. Our Travel Planners systematically calculate the profitability according to your itinerary.

Can you visit Hiroshima with young children?

Hiroshima is perfectly suitable for family visits, even with young children. The Peace Memorial offers paths adapted to different ages, with simplified explanations for the youngest. Miyajima delights children with its freely roaming deer and magical landscapes. Our Travel Planners can organize fun activities like calligraphy workshops or okonomiyaki cooking classes to make the trip educational and enjoyable.
