The Trip Planning Magazine in Kyoto

Why choose a custom stay in Kyoto?

Kyoto deserves much more than a quick visit between Tokyo and Osaka. This former capital of Japan, which reigned over the archipelago from 794 to 1868, holds treasures that take time to fully appreciate. A custom trip gives you the precious freedom to discover the city at your own pace, away from the beaten tourist paths.

Our advisors, specialized in Japan, understand that each traveler has their own expectations. Some dream of meditating in a Zen temple at sunrise, others wish to uncover the secrets of the tea ceremony or encounter a geisha in the cobbled alleys of Gion. Your customized journey to Kyoto perfectly tailors to your interests, whether they are cultural, spiritual, or gastronomic.

The expertise of our local Travel Planners makes all the difference. They know the less frequented temples where a serene atmosphere prevails, the workshops of traditional craftsmen that open their doors to curious visitors, and the family-owned restaurants where the art of Japanese cuisine has been passed down for generations. This intimate knowledge of Kyoto transforms your stay into an authentic experience, far removed from typical tourist circuits.

What to discover during your personalized trip to Kyoto?

The cultural richness of Kyoto exceeds imagination. This city of 1.5 million inhabitants is home to no less than 2,000 temples and shrines, 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, and dozens of preserved historical neighborhoods.

The iconic temples and shrines

The Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji) remains one of Japan’s most photographed monuments, but your custom trip allows you to experience it at the best times, when the golden light is reflected in the pond that surrounds it. Built in 1397, this three-tiered Zen temple, entirely covered in gold leaf, presents a striking sight, especially in spring when cherry trees in bloom frame its ephemeral beauty.

The Kiyomizu-dera temple, perched on the eastern hill, will amaze you with its 13-meter high wooden terrace, built without a single nail using traditional Japanese techniques. From there, the view encompasses the city and reveals the particular geography of Kyoto, nestled in a basin surrounded by mountains.

Our Travel Planners will also guide you to more confidential places like the Sanzen-in temple at Ohara, located an hour north of the city. This 12th-century temple, surrounded by deep green moss gardens, offers a contemplative experience unmatched, especially in autumn when the maples turn red and gold.

The traditional neighborhoods and their treasures

Gion remains the most emblematic neighborhood of Kyoto, where one can still encounter geishas heading to their appointments in ochaya (centuries-old tea houses). Your personalized stay can include an evening in one of these exclusive establishments, where you will discover the refined art of conversation and Japanese entertainment.

The Arashiyama neighborhood, to the west of the city, plunges you into a fairy-tale world with its forest of giant bamboos. This 500-meter walk creates a plant cathedral where the filtered light produces fascinating shadows and light.

Higashiyama, the neighborhood on the eastern hills, retains its period atmosphere with its cobblestone streets lined with traditional wooden houses. Here you will find the finest workshops for ceramics, fans, and textiles, where craftsmen perpetuate centuries-old skills.

The authentic Japanese art of living

Kyoto excels in transforming daily gestures into refined ceremonies. The tea ceremony, codified here in the 16th century by master Sen no Rikyu, finds its purest expression in this city. Your custom trip can include an initiation in a traditional school, where you will learn the precise gestures and Zen philosophy underpinning this practice.

Kyotoite cuisine, called kyo-kaiseki, represents the pinnacle of Japanese cuisine. This court cuisine, developed for the emperors, privileges subtlety of flavors and beauty of presentation. Michelin-starred restaurants in the city continue this tradition, but our specialist advisors will also guide you to family-owned establishments where authenticity prevails over prestige.

How to organize your custom trip to Kyoto?

Organizing a personalized trip to Kyoto requires particular expertise to optimize your time and maximize your discoveries in this multifaceted city.

The best times to visit

The choice of the period significantly influences your Kyoto experience. Each season reveals a different face of the city:

Season Advantages Disadvantages Temperatures
Spring (March-May) Cherry blossoms, mild climate High tourist traffic 15-25°C
Summer (June-August) Traditional festivals, lush greenery Humid heat, rains 25-35°C
Autumn (September-November) Vibrant colors, stable weather Moderate traffic 15-25°C
Winter (December-February) Intimate atmosphere, occasional snow Cold, bare gardens 5-15°C

Autumn remains the ideal time for a trip to Japan, especially from mid-November to early December. The maples of the Tofuku-ji temple create a tunnel of red and gold foliage of stunning beauty, while the temperatures remain pleasant for long walks in the Zen gardens.

Recommended duration and budget

A custom stay in Kyoto is best spread over at least 4 to 5 days to grasp the city's richness without rushing. This duration allows for a mix of cultural visits, traditional experiences, and relaxing moments in the gardens or thermal baths of the surroundings.

For a 7-day trip that includes Kyoto in a broader tour of Japan, count on a budget of 2500 to 4000 euros per person depending on the level of services chosen. This budget covers quality accommodations (traditional ryokans or upscale hotels), meals at good addresses, transportation with the Japan Rail Pass, and authentic cultural experiences.

A honeymoon in Kyoto warrants a more substantial budget, between 4000 and 6000 euros per couple for 10 days, including exceptional services such as a night in a luxury ryokan with a view of a private garden, dinners in Michelin-starred restaurants, and exclusive experiences like a photo session in a kimono at the city's most photogenic locations.

Practical tips for your stay

The logistic organization of your personalized trip to Kyoto benefits from the legendary efficiency of the Japanese transport system. The Shinkansen connects Tokyo to Kyoto in just 2h15, making this one of the world's smoothest rides. Our Travel Planners optimize your travel by integrating the Japan Rail Pass into your itinerary, giving you complete freedom of movement.

Accommodation in Kyoto offers an exceptional range of authentic options. Traditional ryokans, true institutions of Japanese hospitality, immerse you in the Japanese art of living with their tatamis, private thermal baths, and exceptional service. The Tawaraya, founded in 1718, or the Yoshikawa Inn, nestled in the Higashiyama area, represent the excellence of this hospitality tradition.

For a more contemporary approach, Kyoto's design hotels blend modernity and local cultural references. The Aman Kyoto, hidden in a secret garden, or the Hyatt Regency with its breathtaking view of the Japanese Alps, offer Western comfort tinged with Japanese refinement.

Practical tips should not be overlooked: Kyoto is best explored on foot or by bike, with distances between major sites remaining reasonable. Our advisors will provide you with a detailed map of the best pedestrian routes, including secret passages between temples and confidential addresses of local craftsmen.

Your custom trip to Kyoto with Vialala guarantees this tailored approach that makes the difference between just a tourist stay and a true immersion in the soul of Japan. Between age-old traditions and refined art of living, Kyoto will reveal its most precious secrets, away from the hustle of top classic destinations, for a different way of discovering the land of the rising sun.
