Why choose a roadtrip in Turkey for your next vacation?

A roadtrip in Turkey offers you complete freedom to explore this fascinating country where the East meets the West. Imagine yourself behind the wheel, cruising through landscapes that change entirely within a few hours: from the spectacular rock formations of Cappadocia to the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean coast, passing by the minarets of Istanbul reflecting in the Bosporus.

Turkey spans over 783,562 square kilometers, offering an exceptional geographical diversity. Your two weeks in Turkey will allow you to cover approximately 2,500 kilometers through regions with distinctly different characters. This journey in Turkey becomes a true modern odyssey where every kilometer traveled reveals new treasures.

The advantage of a trip in Turkey lies in this unique flexibility: you can spontaneously stop in a perched village, extend your stay on a favorite beach, or adjust your itinerary according to your whims of the moment. Our Travel Planners know these routes perfectly and will advise you on the most beautiful detours, off the beaten tracks.

The rich Turkish cultural heritage fully reveals itself during a roadtrip. You will pass from Byzantine mosques to ancient theaters, from traditional hammams to colorful markets. This gradual immersion allows you to grasp the complexity of this bridge-country between Europe and Asia, with 4,000 years of continuous history.

Two-week itinerary in Turkey: the must-see stops

Your trip to Turkey deserves a carefully thought-out itinerary to optimize your fifteen days in Turkey. Our local experts have designed a balanced route that combines cultural discoveries, breathtaking landscapes, and moments of relaxation by the sea.

Istanbul, the gateway to your Turkish adventure

Start your roadtrip with four days in Istanbul, this metropolis of 15 million inhabitants that spans two continents. Visiting Istanbul requires time as its treasures are numerous. The Sultanahmet district concentrates the iconic monuments: the majestic Blue Mosque with its six minarets, Hagia Sophia with its 31-meter diameter dome, and the Topkapi Palace, which was the heart of the Ottoman Empire for 400 years.

Don't miss an evening dedicated to the whirling dervishes at one of the old Ottoman train stations converted into event venues. This mystical dance, listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, will immerse you in Sufi spirituality. Also, stroll through the Grand Bazaar and its 4,000 shops, a true commercial maze that's 560 years old.

The Beyoğlu district deserves a whole day. The 1.4-kilometer-long Istiklal Avenue pulses to the rhythm of modern Turkish life. Finish with a sunset cruise on the Bosporus to admire the yalis, these wooden Ottoman mansions lining the strait.

The Cappadocia and its lunar landscapes

After Istanbul, head to Cappadocia for three days of total amazement. This unique volcanic region in the world spans 300 square kilometers of rock formations sculpted by erosion. The famous fairy chimneys, some reaching 40 meters in height, create an otherworldly decor that you will explore at the pace of your hikes.

The open-air museum of Göreme brings together about thirty rock-cut churches decorated with Byzantine frescoes dating from the 4th to the 11th century. These sanctuaries carved into the rock bear witness to the fervor of the early Christians who found refuge in these remote valleys.

The must-do experience remains the hot air balloon flight at sunrise. Imagine yourself floating at 300 meters altitude among a hundred other colorful balloons, contemplating this lunar landscape bathed in the first golden light. This activity, offered from April to November depending on weather conditions, turns your trip in Turkey into an unforgettable memory.

The underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymakli complete this discovery. Derinkuyu goes down eight levels to 85 meters deep and could shelter 20,000 people. These troglodyte cities, connected by tunnels of several kilometers, illustrate the ingenuity of local populations in the face of invasions.

The Mediterranean coast, between beaches and ancient remains

Your next stop leads you to the Mediterranean coast for six days of varied discoveries. Antalya, nicknamed the "Turkish Riviera," perfectly combines historical heritage and seaside pleasures. Its historical center, Kaleiçi, spreads its paved alleys between Seljuk ramparts and restored Ottoman houses.

Ancient sites of Aspendos, Perge, and Termessos punctuate your days of cultural visits. The theater of Aspendos, built in the 2nd century, remains one of the best-preserved in the world with its 15,000 seats and perfect acoustics. Termessos, perched at 1,000 meters altitude, offers a striking mountain setting for its Hellenistic ruins.

Kas represents the charming stop of your journey. This small fishing port with white houses adorned with bougainvilleas will seduce you with its preserved authenticity. Excursions to the island of Kekova reveal an ancient city submerged, visible through the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean.

Patara beach absolutely deserves a visit. This 18-kilometer long strip of golden sand, protected as a nesting site for loggerhead turtles, offers memorable sunsets over the sea. The ruins of ancient Patara, the capital of Lycia, emerge from the surrounding dunes.

Pamukkale completes this coastal section with its immaculate white limestone terraces. These natural basins, fed by hot springs at 36°C, create a magical landscape listed as a World Heritage site. The ancient city of Hierapolis, with its theater of 12,000 seats and a necropolis of 1,200 tombs, completes this exceptional visit.

Organizing your roadtrip in Turkey: practical tips and tricks

The success of your trip in Turkey relies on meticulous preparation. Our Travel Planners accompany you in each step of this organization to turn your fifteen days in Turkey into an unforgettable experience.

Car rental and preparations

Renting a car is the backbone of your roadtrip. In Turkey, you must present an international driving license, be at least 21 years old, and have a credit card in the name of the main driver. Rates range from 35 to 60 euros per day depending on the category chosen and the season.

Opt for full insurance, especially recommended for Cappadocian mountain roads. The Turkish road network is generally excellent: 2,127 kilometers of motorways and 67,000 kilometers of national roads facilitate your movements. Count approximately 1.30 euro per liter of gasoline and plan a fuel budget of 300 euros for your 2,500 kilometers.

Download your offline maps before departure and keep a paper road map as a backup. Road signs use the Latin alphabet, but some Turkish knowledge proves useful: "şehir merkezi" means downtown, "otogar" indicates the bus station.

FAQ Turkey

How many days should you plan for a complete roadtrip in Turkey?

Fifteen days is the ideal duration to explore the essential sights of Turkey on a roadtrip. This period allows you to visit Istanbul (4 days), Cappadocia (3 days), the Mediterranean coast (6 days), and Pamukkale (2 days) without rushing. Our Travel Planners can tailor this itinerary to your interests and desired pace of travel.

What is the best season to organize a roadtrip in Turkey?

The optimal periods extend from April to June and from September to October, with pleasant temperatures between 20 and 25°C. These months avoid the intense summer heat (up to 40°C on the coast) and the peak tourist influx. Spring offers verdant landscapes, while autumn ensures still warm seas and perfect conditions for outdoor activities.

What budget should you plan for a two-week road trip in Turkey?

Count on between 2,850 and 3,900 euros per person for a quality road trip including flights, car rental, comfortable accommodations, meals, and main activities. This budget can be optimized depending on your choices of accommodations and dining. Our Travel Planners offer alternatives suited to different budgets while preserving the quality of your Turkish experience.
