Pauline

Turkey has one of the world's most generous maritime coastlines, with nearly 8,000 kilometers of coastlines washed by four different seas. Going on a cruise in Turkey is to treat yourself to a journey that combines pristine beaches, ancient ruins and fishing villages where time seems to stand still. It's hard to find a destination that brings together so many contrasts in an area so accessible.
What makes cruises in Turkey particularly appealing is the richness of what you can experience both aboard and on land. In the morning, you sail in waters of a deep blue; in the afternoon, you explore an archaeological site dating back several millennia. The local gastronomy completes this picture, with mezze, grilled fish and oriental sweets that you discover at each stop.
Turkey sits at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, and this unique position is felt in every aspect of the journey. Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman influences overlay as the stops go by, creating a cultural experience of rare density. For travelers who wish to go beyond the classic circuit, Turkish Mediterranean cruises also offer the possibility to extend to Greece or Italy, further enriching the itinerary.
The Turkish coasts lend themselves to many navigation options, from the shortest to the most ambitious. Here is an overview of the two major routes that structure most cruises in Turkey.
The Turkish Aegean coast is undoubtedly the most coveted by navigators. It stretches from Çanakkale in the north to Bodrum in the south, passing through Izmir and Kusadasi. It is from this port that you can reach the ruins of Ephesus, one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the Mediterranean world, with its monumental theater able to accommodate 25,000 spectators.
Bodrum, formerly Halicarnassus, deserves special attention. This white city with houses covered in bougainvillea hosts the St. Peter's Castle, built in the 15th century by the Knights of Rhodes. From Bodrum, gulets, these wooden vessels typical of Turkey, depart toward secret bays that only boats can reach. It is precisely this kind of experience that your Travel Planners at Vialala can integrate into your program, selecting the less frequented coves according to the season.
No cruise in Turkey would be complete without a stopover in Istanbul. The city spans two continents and contains, on its own, centuries of history. The Sultanahmet district, the historic heart of the city, houses monuments that have stood the test of time. The Blue Mosque, recognizable by its six minarets, is one of the absolute must-see sights. Built between 1609 and 1616, it derives its nickname from the thousands of Iznik ceramic tiles that adorn its interior.
A few steps away, Hagia Sophia testifies to the layering of empires that shaped Istanbul. The Grand Bazaar, with its 4,000 shops spread over more than 60 covered streets, plunges you into a unique atmosphere. A cruise on the Bosphorus will let you admire the city's silhouette from the water, with its domes and minarets silhouetted against the sky. This experience, combined with the Mediterranean cruises we offer at Vialala, can be part of a broader itinerary linking Istanbul to the Aegean coast.
The sailing season generally runs from April to October, but each period has its own advantages. Here is a brief table to help you choose the ideal moment according to your desires:
| Period | Temperatures (air/sea) | Ambiance | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|---|
| April - May | 18-24°C / 18°C | Calm, green | Coastal hiking, archaeological sites |
| June - July | 28-34°C / 24°C | Lively, sunny | Swimming, active sailing |
| August | 32-36°C / 26°C | Very crowded | Beaches, summer atmosphere |
| September - October | 22-28°C / 22°C | Gentle, less crowded | Relaxed cruise, gastronomy |
September is often regarded as the best compromise. The sea remains warm, the summer crowds dissipate and the temperatures become more comfortable for visiting outdoor sites. Cruises in Turkey organized at this time allow you to enjoy the stops without the pressure of the high season.
If you wish to sail aboard a traditional gulet, prefer the period from May to October. These vessels, which can accommodate 6 to 20 passengers depending on the model, offer incomparable privacy and a freedom of navigation that large liners cannot match.
Organizing a cruise in Turkey requires juggling many parameters: the choice of boat type, the selection of stops, the duration of navigation, the activities on land and the accommodations if you want to combine sea and inland discovery. This is precisely where our Travel Planners come into play.
At Vialala, every travel project starts with an in-depth exchange with an expert who knows Turkey inside out. It isn't about proposing a standard program, but about building an itinerary that matches your wishes, your pace and your budget. Do you want to sail on a gulet between Marmaris and Kekova, then join Istanbul for a few days? Or would you prefer a Mediterranean cruise that links Antalya to the Greek islands? All these configurations are possible.
Your Travel Planner can also integrate experiences you won't find in a classic catalog:
The cruises in Turkey that we design at Vialala adapt as well to couples seeking intimacy as to families wishing to alternate cultural discoveries and moments of relaxation. The ideal duration generally falls between 7 and 14 days, but nothing is set in stone. Your journey begins as soon as you share your desires with us.
French nationals must obtain an electronic visa (e-Visa) before departure for Turkey. The process is done online on the official Turkish government site in a few minutes. The visa is valid for 90 days within a 180-day period. If your cruise includes stops in Greece, also check the entry conditions for each country visited.
A gulet is a wooden sailing vessel with an auxiliary motor, typical of Turkish navigation. These boats come in several sizes, from the intimate version for 6 people to models that can accommodate around twenty passengers. The choice depends on your group, your budget and the level of comfort you desire. Our Vialala Travel Planners help you select the vessel best suited to your project.
Absolutely. Turkey's geographic location makes it naturally compatible with extensions to Greece, Cyprus, or even Italy. It is also very common to combine a cruise along the Aegean coasts with a few days in Istanbul or a stay in Cappadocia. Vialala designs multi-stop itineraries that combine sailing and land discovery according to your wishes.
