The Trip Planning Magazine in Zanzibar

Why is Zanzibar an ideal destination for a cruise?

Nicknamed 'the Spice Island', Zanzibar is an archipelago located about 35 kilometers off the Tanzanian coast, in the heart of the Indian Ocean. The main island, Unguja, alone concentrates a diversity of landscapes and cultures that makes it a top stop for any traveler seeking authenticity. Its pristine beaches, rich seabeds and unique historic heritage create an ideal setting for sailing and exploring.

In the heart of the town, Stone Town, the historic center listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000, merits a walking visit before or after your navigation. Its labyrinthine streets, carved doors and coral houses bear witness to a past influenced by Arab, Indian, Persian and European cultures. This cultural blend is also found in the local gastronomy, where spices grown on the island, such as cloves or cinnamon, flavor every dish.

But it is especially from the sea that Zanzibar reveals all its splendor. The turquoise waters surrounding the archipelago shelter exceptionally rich coral reefs, ephemeral sand banks and desert islets accessible only by boat. This is precisely why a cruise to Zanzibar is one of the best ways to discover this archipelago in all its facets.

What nautical experiences to have during a cruise to Zanzibar?

The sailing offerings in Zanzibar are as varied as the landscapes along its coast. Whether you want a private sea excursion or a full day of exploration, there is a plan suited to every desire. Here are the main experiences to consider for your cruise to Zanzibar.

Sail aboard a traditional dhow

The dhow, or dhow in Swahili, is the traditional sailing vessel that has traversed the Indian Ocean for centuries. Climb aboard one of these carved wooden boats to reach the archipelago's best-preserved islands. Mnemba Island, surrounded by a protected coral atoll, is one of the top destinations departing from Zanzibar. The marine life there includes sea turtles, dolphins and a multitude of tropical fish. A day on a dhow usually includes snorkeling, a seafood lunch prepared on board and a stop on a white sand bank, time for a swim in shallow, crystal-clear waters.

The island of Tumbatu, northwest of Unguja, is another popular option for its less-frequented reefs and wilder atmosphere. For travelers seeking a private experience, it is entirely possible to book a dhow exclusively and fully customize the day's itinerary.

Enjoy a sunset cruise

Among the most memorable moments of a stay in Zanzibar, the sunset cruise holds a special place. From the north coast, around Nungwi and Kendwa beaches, boats depart in the late afternoon to offer passengers a spectacular natural display. The sun slowly sinks on the horizon of the Indian Ocean, tinting the sky with orange and pink hues as you sail gently along the coast. Some packages include an aperitif served on board, making the experience even more enjoyable. A sunset cruise typically lasts between 2 and 4 hours, making it easy to fit into any travel itinerary.

Explore the islands by catamaran

For those who want to combine comfort and exploration, the catamaran is an excellent option. More stable and spacious than the dhow, it allows reaching more distant sites in good conditions. The Safari Blue, iconic excursion from Zanzibar, takes travelers to the Menai Bay lagoon, south of the island, for a day of snorkeling, swimming with dolphins and relaxing on secluded sandy beaches. This outing lasts about 6 to 8 hours and is one of the most complete experiences you can have at sea around the archipelago.

What is the best time for a cruise to Zanzibar?

Zanzibar's climate is tropical, with two distinct rainy seasons that directly influence sailing conditions. To fully enjoy your cruise to Zanzibar, it is essential to choose the right period. The following table gives you an overview of climatic conditions month by month.

Period Conditions Recommendation
January - February Heat, low rainfall Ideal for sailing
March - May Great rainy season (Masika) Not recommended
June - October Dry season, trade winds Excellent for cruising
November Short rainy season (Vuli) Mixed
December Transition, good weather Very favorable

The period from June to October is generally considered the best for a cruise to Zanzibar. The trade winds blow regularly, the waters are calm and underwater visibility is optimal. December and January also offer very good conditions, with pleasant temperatures around 28 to 30°C and little precipitation.

FAQ Zanzibar

Do you need a visa to travel to Zanzibar before boarding?

French nationals must obtain a visa to enter Tanzania, of which Zanzibar is a part. It can be requested online via the official Tanzanian portal before departure, or upon arrival at the airport. The cost is about 50 US dollars. It is advisable to plan ahead to avoid any delays at the time of your departure from Zanzibar.

Can you combine a cruise to Zanzibar with a safari in Tanzania?

Absolutely. Many travelers choose to combine the two experiences for a complete stay in East Africa. It is possible to start with a safari in the Serengeti or the Ngorongoro Crater, then reach Zanzibar by domestic flight from Dar es Salaam in under an hour. Vialala can arrange this kind of tailor-made combination, coordinating each step for a smooth trip with no logistical constraints.

What activities can be done on a Zanzibar cruise with children?

Zanzibar is a very family-friendly destination. Dhow excursions often include snorkeling in shallow waters, accessible from age 6. The dolphin encounters in the bay of Kizimkazi, or a visit to Prison Island to observe Aldabra giant tortoises, are activities enjoyed by the youngest. Our Travel Planners ensure that reputable operators and outings suitable for all ages are selected.
