Why choose a custom tour in Saudi Arabia?

Since 2019, Saudi Arabia has gradually opened up to tourism, unveiling archaeological and cultural treasures that were long unknown. Unlike traditional tours, a custom journey allows you to explore this 2.15 million km² kingdom according to your passions and at your own pace. Our local Travel Planners, true experts in the destination, design your Saudi Arabia tour based on your interests, whether it's Nabataean history, modern architecture, or natural discoveries.

Your Saudi discovery tour can thus prioritize UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as the carved tombs of Hegra or the historic district of Al-Balad in Jeddah. For authenticity seekers, we organize encounters with local communities in remote oasis areas of the desert. Modernity enthusiasts will appreciate the futuristic projects of NEOM or the skyscrapers of the capital. This personalized approach guarantees a unique experience, far from the beaten paths of traditional escorted tours.

The advantage of a small group or a privatized trip lies in the total flexibility of your itinerary. Wish to extend your stay in Al-Ula to admire the rock formations at sunset? Your Travel Planner immediately adjusts your program. This flexibility is particularly valuable in a country where some sites may close without notice, requiring a responsiveness that only our local experts can provide.

What are the must-sees of a tour in Saudi Arabia?

A well-designed Saudi Arabia tour takes you through the many facets of this contrasting kingdom, where millennia-old tradition and bold modernity coexist harmoniously.

Riyadh, the modern capital

Riyadh, a metropolis of 7 million residents, is often the starting point of your Saudi tour. This city on the Nejd plateau impresses with its striking contrasts between ultra-modern neighborhoods and historical remnants. The Kingdom Centre, a 302-meter tower launched in 2002, provides a panoramic view of the vast urban landscape from its sky bridge. At its feet, the Diriyah district tells the story of Al-Saud through the earth-brick ruins of Al-Turaif, a UNESCO site since 2010.

The national museum, opened in 1999, traces 4,000 years of Saudi history through eight thematic galleries. Your visit takes you from ancient civilizations to the oil discoveries of 1938, covering the unification of the kingdom by Abdelaziz Al-Saud. The Masmak Fortress, built in 1865, bears witness to the conquest of Riyadh in 1902, a foundational event of modern Saudi Arabia.

Al-Ula and Nabataean treasures

Al-Ula is the archaeological jewel of your Saudi discovery tour. This northwest oasis, inhabited for over 7,000 years, is home to Hegra, the first Saudi site listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This Nabataean necropolis, contemporary of Petra, features 111 monumental tombs carved into the red sandstone between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD.

The site of Dadan, capital of the kingdoms of Dadan and Lihyan between the 8th and 2nd centuries BC, reveals inscriptions in Dadanite and Lihyanite scripts. Jabal Ikmah, known as the "open-air library", gathers over 450 inscriptions in various ancient scripts. These epigraphic testimonies document trade exchanges on the incense route, which connected Southern Arabia to the Mediterranean.

The Elephant Rock (Jabal Al-Fil), a natural geological formation 52 meters high, illustrates the beauty of the desert landscapes of Al-Ula. This natural sculpture, shaped by erosion, stands majestically in the desert, providing a particularly striking sight at sunset.

Jeddah and the Red Sea

Jeddah, the historic gateway to Mecca and the kingdom's second-largest city with 4.7 million inhabitants, typically concludes your Saudi escape tour. This port city on the Red Sea captivates with its unique architectural heritage and its assumed modernity.

Al-Balad, the UNESCO-listed historic center since 2014, preserves the traditional architecture of Hejaz. Its coral and wood tower houses, some reaching seven stories, reflect the commercial prosperity of the 16th-19th centuries. Mashrabiyas, carved wooden balconies, allowed women to observe the street without being seen, an architectural response to climatic and social constraints.

The Jeddah Corniche stretches for 30 kilometers along the Red Sea, offering beaches, gardens, and contemporary sculptures. The King Fahd Fountain, reaching a height of 312 meters, is one of the tallest fountains in the world. Its seawater jets reach a speed of 375 km/h, creating a spectacle visible from 30 kilometers away.

How to organize your discovery tour in Saudi Arabia?

Organizing your tailor-made trip in Saudi Arabia requires careful planning, taking into account the climatic, cultural, and logistical specifics of the kingdom.

Duration and recommended itineraries

An optimal Saudi Arabia tour spans 8 to 12 days, a duration that allows you to discover the major sites without excessive haste. The classic itinerary "colors and riches" combines Riyadh (2-3 days), Al-Ula (2-3 days), and Jeddah (2 days), with possible extensions to Medina or Taif depending on your interests.

For an in-depth discovery tour, we recommend adding Hail and its Jubbah petroglyphs, or Abha in the Asir Mountains to discover green Arabia. Desert enthusiasts may enjoy an extension to the Rub al-Khali, the world's largest continuous sand desert, covering 650,000 km².

The following table presents three tailor-made tour options suited to different traveler profiles:

Tour Duration Destinations Indicative Price Highlights
Treasures of Arabia 8 days Riyadh - Al-Ula - Jeddah From €3,200 UNESCO sites, small group
Mirages of Arabia 10 days Riyadh - Hail - Al-Ula - Medina - Jeddah From €4,100 Complete Discovery
Saudi Escape 12 days Complete circuit + Abha/Taif From €5,200 Total Immersion

Best time to go

The optimal period for your Saudi circuit extends from November to March, when temperatures remain bearable. During these months, the highs fluctuate between 20°C and 28°C, ideal for prolonged outdoor visits. Nights can be chilly in the desert, with minimum temperatures sometimes dropping to 5°C in January.

The Saudi summer, from May to September, features extreme temperatures regularly exceeding 45°C, making daytime visits challenging. However, this period coincides with the European school holidays and may suit travelers who can withstand the heat, provided scheduling adjustments favor morning and nighttime activities.

Your honeymoon or small group tour is best to avoid the month of Ramadan, a fasting period when restaurants and tourist attractions adjust their hours. Our Travel Planners precisely inform you of the dates according to the Muslim lunar year and adjust your schedule accordingly.

Tailor-made trips also allow you to enjoy specific cultural events, such as the Winter at Tantora festival in Al-Ula (December-March) or the Riyadh season (October-March), enhancing your exploration with temporary shows and exhibitions. This calendar flexibility is a major advantage of custom tours compared to fixed departures of traditional trips.

FAQ Saudi Arabia

What are the entry formalities for a tour in Saudi Arabia?

French, Belgian, and Swiss citizens can obtain a 90-day tourist e-visa on the official website visa.visitsaudi.com. This electronic visa costs about €120 and includes mandatory insurance. Your passport must be valid for 6 months after your return and must not contain any Israeli stamps.

What budget should you plan for a discovery tour in Saudi Arabia?

An 8-day Saudi Arabia tour costs between €3,200 and €4,500 per person, including international flights, 4-5 star accommodations, full board, and a French-speaking guide. Small group tours are more economical than privatized travels, while extensions to remote sites increase the budget by 15 to 20%.

What clothing precautions to take when traveling to Saudi Arabia?

Both men and women should wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees in public places. The abaya is no longer mandatory for foreign women, but a scarf is still required to visit certain religious sites such as the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. Opt for light and breathable fabrics suitable for the desert climate.
