Why is Indonesia ideal for a family trip?

Indonesia is one of the largest and most diverse archipelagos in Southeast Asia. With more than 17,000 islands spread over nearly 5,000 kilometers from east to west, this country offers a palette of experiences that few destinations in the world can match. Active volcanoes, ancient temples, white-sand beaches, jungles inhabited by orangutans: each island has its own identity, and this is precisely what makes a family trip to Indonesia so rich.

A destination accessible to all generations

Contrary to some common beliefs, traveling to Indonesia with children is quite feasible, including with very young children. The tourist infrastructure has developed significantly, notably in Bali and on the island of Java. Family-friendly accommodations are numerous, local guides accustomed to families, and activities adaptable to all ages. Traveling with family in this archipelago means giving your children their first contact with a culture deeply different, marked by Hindu spirituality in Bali, Islam in Java, and animist traditions on the more remote islands.

Activities that appeal to everyone

What makes a family stay in Indonesia so engaging is the diversity of possible experiences. Teenagers seeking thrills will find their happiness with surfing in Canggu, rafting on the Telaga Waja River, or the ascent of Mount Batur. The younger ones will be amazed by Ubud's Monkey Forest, the sea turtles of the Gili Islands, or the Komodo dragons. And for parents, the terraced rice fields of Jatiluwih (a UNESCO site) or the Borobudur and Prambanan temples provide unforgettable visits.

What are the musts of a family stay in Indonesia?

Indonesia is full of family-friendly destinations. Here are the stops that most often appear in a family travel itinerary:

  • Bali: between the must-see Bali trip for its temples, its terraced rice fields and the Monkey Forest in Ubud, and its accessible beaches such as Sanur or Jimbaran, the Island of the Gods stands as an ideal base;
  • The island of Java: the Bromo volcano and its sunrise over a smoky caldera, the Buddhist temple of Borobudur, or the lively streets of Yogyakarta are all memorable experiences for the whole family;
  • The Gili Islands: without cars or scooters, these three small islands off Lombok offer a serene setting for snorkeling with sea turtles, swimming and relaxation;
  • Nusa Lembongan: only a 45-minute boat ride from Sanur, this island calmer than Bali is perfect for a serene escape with children;
  • Raja Ampat: for families passionate about marine nature, this archipelago of West Papua is home to one of the world's greatest marine biodiversity.

To help you choose the best time for your Indonesia family trip, here is an overview of the climate by month:

Period Climate Recommendation
May – October Dry season Ideal for visiting Bali, Java, Lombok and the Gili Islands
July – August Peak season Book several months in advance
November – April Wet season Frequent rain, but trips possible with adjustments
December – March Monsoon Not recommended for the southern islands

The dry season remains the most favorable period for family holidays in Indonesia. If you want to avoid the summer crowds, the months of May, June and September offer an excellent compromise between mild weather and moderate crowds.

How to properly prepare your Indonesia family trip?

Organizing a family trip requires careful planning, especially when the destination is an archipelago as vast as Indonesia. A few essential points deserve your attention before departure.

In terms of formalities, French, Belgian and Swiss nationals can obtain a visa on arrival for a 30-day stay, for about 500,000 rupiah (roughly 30 euros per person). It is also possible to apply online via the e-VOA on the official Indonesian immigration site. Since October 1, 2025, an All Indonesia electronic arrival card is required at entry, including for children.

Health-wise, no vaccinations are mandatory to enter Indonesia, except if coming from a country at risk of yellow fever. It is however recommended to be vaccinated against hepatitis A and to plan anti-malarial treatment depending on the areas visited. Also consider mosquito repellents and bottled water for the whole family.

For on-site travel, renting a vehicle with a driver is often the most comfortable solution with children. Domestic flights allow quick connections between the major islands, while ferries ensure links between Bali, Lombok and the Gili Islands. Expect an average of 15 hours 30 minutes of flight from France to reach Bali or Jakarta.

FAQ Indonesia

What age is appropriate for taking your children to Indonesia?

There is no minimum age for a family trip to Indonesia. From 6 or 7 years old, children can fully enjoy the activities on offer: snorkeling in the Gili Islands, visiting Bali's temples, strolling through the rice fields or observing wildlife. For younger children, Bali remains the most accessible island, with suitable infrastructure and comfortable family-friendly accommodations.

What budget should you plan for a family vacation in Indonesia?

The budget varies depending on duration, the islands visited and the level of comfort desired. For a 15-day stay in Bali and neighboring islands, budget between 2,500 and 5,000 euros per adult, flights included. Children often benefit from reduced rates on activities and accommodations. A Vialala Travel Planner can help you build a family trip that fits your budget.

How long does a family trip to Indonesia take?

A minimum of 15 days is recommended to enjoy a family trip to Indonesia without rushing. This format allows you to combine two or three destinations, such as Bali, the island of Java, and the Gili Islands. For families wishing to explore further, a 3-week stay gives you time to reach more distant destinations such as Lombok, Nusa Lembongan, or Raja Ampat.
