Why choose an itinerary in Indonesia?

Indonesia is far more than a destination: it is an archipelago with a thousand faces, where each island tells a different story. Active volcanoes, tropical forests, rice terraces carved by centuries of agriculture, Hindu temples and white-sand beaches follow one another along a route that resembles no other. With its 270 million inhabitants spread across more than 17,000 islands, this country is one of the most diverse in the world, both culturally and naturally.

Going on an Indonesia tour means choosing not to settle for just one facet of this country. It is crossing landscapes that change every few hours, meeting communities with living traditions and soaking up a spirituality that permeates daily life. In Southeast Asia, few destinations offer such richness in a single trip.

Here are some good reasons to choose Indonesia for your next itinerary:

  • Landscapes of exceptional diversity, from lush rice fields to volcanic craters;
  • A culture deeply rooted in traditions, visible at every turn;
  • Paradisiacal beaches accessible from most of the major islands;
  • A generous, spicy and aromatic gastronomy, to discover at every step.

Which islands and steps to plan for your Indonesia itinerary?

Indonesia is to be explored à la carte. Depending on the duration of your stay and your desires, you can concentrate your itinerary on a single island or chain several destinations for a complete immersion. Here are the most essential steps to include in your itinerary.

Bali, the Island of the Gods

It is impossible to mention an Indonesia itinerary without talking about Bali. Nicknamed the island of the gods due to its thousands of Hindu temples, it charms with the softness of its atmosphere as much as with the beauty of its landscapes. The rice terraces of Ubud, listed as UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage, offer panoramas of an intense green that is not easily forgotten. The Tanah Lot temple, perched on a rock battered by the waves, is one of the island's most photographed sites, especially at sunset.

Beyond temples and emerald-green rice fields, Bali also offers paradisical beaches with very varied atmospheres: lively in Seminyak and Kuta, calmer and wilder in Amed or Lovina. Each corner of the island has its own character.

Java and the Borobudur temple

Two hours by plane from Bali, Java is Indonesia's most populous island and one of the richest in historical heritage. The Borobudur temple, inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List, is the world's largest Buddhist monument. Built in the 8th century, it consists of nine levels adorned with more than 2,500 bas-reliefs and 504 Buddha statues. Watching the sunrise from its upper terraces, with the mist wrapping the surrounding volcanoes, is a unique experience.

The city of Yogyakarta, an hour's drive from Borobudur, is also worth a stop. Cultural heart of Java, it hosts batik workshops, traditional dance performances and the Hindu temple complex of Prambanan, which counts nearly 240 sanctuaries.

Lombok, the Gili Islands and Komodo National Park

East of Bali, Lombok offers a more preserved alternative, with its white-sand beaches and its volcano, Rinjani, which rises to 3,726 meters. From Lombok, a short boat ride is enough to reach Gili Trawangan, the largest of the Gili Islands, renowned for its crystal-clear waters and rich marine life with sea turtles.

Farther east, Komodo National Park covers more than 1,800 km² and is home to the famous Komodo dragons, the largest lizards in the world up to 3 meters long. The waters surrounding this archipelago are among Indonesia's best diving sites.

What is the best time to go on an Indonesia itinerary?

Indonesia's climate varies by island and season, but a general rule applies to most destinations: the dry season, from May to October, is the ideal period to travel. Temperatures range from 25°C to 32°C year-round, with higher humidity between November and April.

Here is an overview of the best periods depending on your preferences:

Period Weather Ideal for
May to July Dry season, sunny weather Hiking, cultural visits, guided tours
August to October Dry season, slightly cooler Diving, trekking, honeymoon travel
November to January Beginning of the wet season Off-season Bali, more affordable rates
February to April Rainy season Less recommended for an Indonesia itinerary

For a honeymoon trip or a small-group itinerary, September and October offer an excellent compromise: the dry season is ending, sites are less crowded than in July-August and the landscapes remain stunning.

FAQ Indonesia

How long should you plan for an Indonesia itinerary?

For a first Indonesia itinerary, plan at least 10 to 12 days to discover Bali and a neighboring island such as Lombok. To explore several destinations, Java, Bali, Lombok and Komodo, for example, a stay of 15 to 18 days is more suitable. Our Travel Planners can adjust the duration according to your availability and your travel priorities.

Is a visa required to travel to Indonesia?

For stays of less than 30 days, French citizens can obtain a visa on arrival at major airports, for a cost of 500,000 rupiahs. An electronic visa is also available online before departure. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months after the return date. Since August 2025, the All Indonesia digital form is mandatory within 48 hours prior to arrival.

Can we do a family tour in Indonesia with young children?

Yes, Indonesia is a family-friendly destination. Bali, in particular, offers many activities suitable for children: exploring the rice terraces, encounters with animals in nature parks, cooking or Balinese dance workshops. Our Travel Planners design tailor-made itineraries in Indonesia for families, taking into account the pace of younger children and selecting suitable accommodations.
