To discover in Indonesia

Why is Indonesia an ideal destination for a tailor-made trip?

This vast archipelago located in Southeast Asia stretches over more than 5,000 kilometers from east to west, bringing together landscapes, cultures and atmospheres of rare diversity. It is precisely this richness that makes it an exceptional playground for a tailor-made trip in Indonesia: each island has its own identity, and every traveler can find there what they are really looking for.

An archipelago with a thousand faces

Hard to sum up Indonesia in a few words. Java captivates with its Buddhist temples classified as UNESCO World Heritage, such as Borobudur, and with its impressive volcanoes. Bali, nicknamed the Island of Gods, enchants with its Hindu spirituality, its terraced rice fields and its daily ceremonies. Further east, Lombok offers still-preserved nature, while Flores surprises with its animist villages and volcanic landscapes. Sumatra, for its part, houses the last tropical forests where orangutans live, and the Toraja country in Sulawesi invites you to discover ancestral funeral rites that exist nowhere else in the world.

Traveling in Indonesia means accepting to be surprised at every step. And this is precisely why a stay in Indonesia lends itself so well to personalization.

Unique experiences between volcanoes, temples and underwater worlds

Beyond landscapes, trips to Indonesia stand out for the variety of experiences they offer. Hiking enthusiasts can climb Kawah Ijen in Java, a volcano whose crater houses an acidic lake with turquoise reflections, or Mount Bromo to witness a unforgettable sunrise. Divers, for their part, will find in the underwater worlds of the Gili Islands and Raja Ampat some of the richest coral reefs on the planet, with more than 600 species of corals recorded.

Between volcanoes and beaches, Indonesia also offers a deep cultural immersion: learn the basics of Balinese cuisine in a workshop in Ubud, attend a ceremony in a Bali temple, or sail between the Sunda Islands aboard a traditional boat. The possibilities are endless, and this is precisely what a tailor-made trip to Indonesia enables.

When is the best time to visit Indonesia to make the most of your stay?

Indonesia has two main seasons, but its geographic extent implies significant climatic variations from island to island. Here is an overview of the most favorable periods to organize your trip in Indonesia:

Period Conditions Recommended islands
April to October Dry season, ideal for traveling Bali, Java, Lombok, Flores
November to March Rainy season, lush vegetation Raja Ampat, Sumatra
July and August Peak season, heavy crowds All islands
May, June, September Ideal compromise: good weather and fewer crowds Bali, Java and Lombok

The dry season, which generally runs from April to October, is the most favored period for a stay in Indonesia. Temperatures range between 26 and 30 °C, rainfall is rare on the southern islands, and conditions are perfect for hiking, diving and cultural discovery. To avoid the heavy crowds in July and August, May, June and September often represent the best compromise.

Some islands, such as Raja Ampat, are more accessible between November and March. Our Travel Planners at Vialala help you choose the most suitable period according to your wishes and the destinations you want to explore.

What itineraries for a trip to Indonesia according to your wishes?

Indonesia lends itself to many ways of traveling. Whether you are seeking adventure, relaxation, cultural discoveries, or a romantic stay, there is an itinerary made for you.

Java and Bali, the must-see combo

For a first trip to Indonesia, the Java-Bali combination remains a safe bet. In two to three weeks, you can explore Yogyakarta's temples, witness the sunrise over Mount Bromo, then head to Bali to dive into the unique atmosphere of the island of the gods. A trip to Bali allows you to discover Ubud and its rice terraces, the Tanah Lot or Uluwatu temples, and finish with a few days of relaxation on the southern beaches or at the Gili Islands.

This type of itinerary is suitable for couples as well as families. Bali as a family destination is especially appreciated: children are welcomed with genuine warmth, and the activities offered are numerous, from Balinese cookery classes, bike rides through the rice fields to swimming in natural pools.

Less-known islands for an off-the-beaten-path stay

For those who want to go beyond the most famous destinations, Indonesia has wonderful surprises. Flores and its Kelimutu volcano with its three color-changing lakes, Sulawesi and its Toraja traditions, or Sumatra and its tropical forests provide fascinating alternatives for a tailor-made Indonesia trip.

A honeymoon trip in Indonesia can, for example, combine a few days in Bali in a charming accommodation, then an escape to the Gili Islands to enjoy the seabed and the serenity of these small car-free islets. Our Travel Planners know the secret addresses and experiences that transform an ordinary stay into an unforgettable memory.

FAQ Indonesia

What are the must-see attractions to discover during a trip to Indonesia?

Indonesia is a true mosaic of cultures, landscapes, and unforgettable experiences. Among the must-see attractions, Bali is often the starting point for travelers. With its breathtaking beaches, terraced rice fields, and majestic temples like the Uluwatu Temple, it is truly exceptional. Nature enthusiasts should not miss Java, where Mount Bromo offers spectacular sunrises. In Sumatra, the Gunung Leuser National Park is perfect for observing orangutans in their natural habitat. Finally, the Gili Islands offer absolute relaxation and excellent diving opportunities. These iconic locations ensure a rich and adventurous journey through Indonesia.

What is the best time to travel to Indonesia?

The best time to travel to Indonesia is from April to October during the dry season. This period is ideal for enjoying the beaches, exploring temples, and trekking through mountains without weather constraints. Conversely, it's advisable to avoid the wet season, from November to March, as some regions might experience heavy rainfall. August, although very popular, can be particularly crowded with tourists. Plan your trip well to enjoy optimal conditions and discover Indonesia at its best.

What are some unique activities you can do in Indonesia?

Indonesia offers a myriad of unique activities to enrich your stay. You can take a Balinese cooking class to learn the secrets of local cuisine or hike through the stunning terraced rice fields in Tegalalang, Ubud. For thrill-seekers, diving with manta rays around Nusa Penida is a must. Additionally, yoga and meditation are highly popular in Bali, especially in Ubud, where spiritual retreats offer a chance for personal reconnection. Finally, attending a traditional ceremony, such as a Kecak dance, provides an unparalleled immersion into Indonesian culture.

Do you need a visa to travel to Indonesia?

For stays of less than 30 days, French, Belgian and Swiss nationals can obtain a tourist visa on arrival, for about 500,000 rupiahs. It is also possible to apply online before departure via the official e-VOA portal. Since October 2025, an electronic arrival card is also required, to be completed within 48 hours prior to arrival.

How long should you plan for a trip to Indonesia?

A minimum of two weeks is recommended to fully enjoy a stay in Indonesia, especially if you want to combine several islands. A Bali-only trip can be designed in 10 to 12 days, while an itinerary combining Java and Bali ideally requires 15 to 19 days. Our Travel Planners adapt the duration of your trip according to your wishes and the destinations you want to explore.

Is Indonesia a family-friendly destination for travel?

Yes, Indonesia is a very family-friendly destination. Bali for families is particularly appreciated thanks to the variety of activities on offer, the warm welcome of the locals, and the many child-friendly accommodations. Specific itineraries can be designed from age 2, favoring a relaxed pace, playful experiences and comfortable accommodations.
