The Trip Planning Magazine to Greece

Why choose Greece for your family vacation?

Greece has this rare gift of pleasing all members of a family, no matter their age. Children find a natural playground for adventure, with mythology coming to life on archaeological sites and swims in turquoise waters. Adults, for their part, savor the cultural richness, generous cuisine and the Mediterranean lifestyle. Few destinations offer such a balance without ever pushing the envelope.

A country that speaks to children as well as to adults

Visiting Greece with children means giving them a living and captivating history lesson. In Athens, the Acropolis dominates the city from its sacred rock and the Parthenon, built in the 5th century BCE, impresses even the youngest. On the Peloponnese, the ruins of Epidaurus or Mycenae nourish the imagination. On Crete, the Palace of Knossos plunges the whole family into the Minotaur myth. And between visits, the fine sandy beaches and hidden coves offer swimming breaks that no one refuses.

Greece also offers simple and flavorful cuisine that children readily adopt: souvlakis, tzatziki, golden pitas and sweet baklava spice up meals in the local taverns. The warm hospitality of the Greeks toward families does the rest.

When to go for a family trip to Greece?

Choosing the time of year has a big influence on the quality of your stay. Here is an overview of the seasons to better plan your vacation in Greece:

Period Average temperatures Sea Crowds Ideal for
April – May 18 to 24°C 18 to 20°C Low Archaeological sites, hikes
June 26 to 28°C 22°C Moderate Balance of culture and beach
July – August 30 to 35°C 25 to 27°C High Beaches, Greek islands
September – October 22 to 28°C 23 to 25°C Moderate All types of stay

For families with young children or those who want to explore mainland Greece without the heat, spring and early autumn remain the most comfortable periods. If beach time and swimming are a priority, July and August naturally have higher crowds.

What to see and do in Greece with kids?

Greece has plenty of activities to keep the whole family engaged. Between ancient heritage, wild nature and aquatic leisure, days fill up by themselves. The key is to plan your itinerary well to balance cultural discoveries and moments of relaxation.

Athens and mainland Greece: between history and wonder

Athens often serves as the starting point for a family trip to Greece. The capital deserves at least two days to grasp its essence. Besides the Acropolis and the museum dedicated to it, the Plaka district invites you to wander its cobbled streets, sample local specialties and watch the Changing of the Guard in front of Parliament. Mount Lycabettus itself offers a 360° view of the city.

Beyond Athens, mainland Greece holds gems often little known. Meteora, in central Greece, is one of the country’s most spectacular sites: monasteries perched atop vertiginous rock pillars, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The area contains about twenty rock formations of which six monasteries are still inhabited, accessible after several hundred steps. A memorable experience for young and old.

The Peloponnese, connected to Athens by a 2.9 km bridge spanning the Gulf of Corinth, offers an ideal road trip for families who want to explore classical Greece at their own pace, between ancient sites, authentic villages and rugged coasts.

The Greek islands: beaches, whitewashed villages and freedom

It’s hard to talk about a trip to Greece without mentioning its islands. With more than 6,000 islands and islets, the choice may seem dizzying, but a few destinations naturally stand out for successful family holidays:

  • Crete with the family, for its diversity: pink-sand beaches at Elafonissi, Samaria Gorge, archaeological sites and rich gastronomy;
  • The Cyclades islands, notably Naxos and Paros, for their family-friendly beaches, whitewashed villages and a peaceful atmosphere;
  • Corfu, in the Ionian Islands, for its lush vegetation, calm waters and beaches accessible to children;
  • Rhodes, for its mix of beaches, medieval old town and nautical activities.

Crete deserves special attention for families. With its 8,336 km², it is the largest Greek island and a destination in its own right. You can spend two weeks there without ever getting bored, between the wild coves of the south, lively beach resorts in the north and mountain villages inland.

How to organize your stay in Greece with your family?

Preparing a family trip requires meticulous organization so that everyone can fully enjoy it. In Greece, the question of pace and mode of travel is central.

Road trip or fixed stay: finding the right rhythm

Two main approaches are available to you to explore Greece with your family. The first is to settle into a single accommodation and base yourself there. This setup is particularly suitable for families with young children who need anchors and stability. Crete or a Cyclades island like Naxos fit perfectly with this type of stay.

The second option, the road trip, appeals to families who want to see as much of mainland Greece as possible or hop between several islands. Renting a car is then essential to move freely, especially in the Peloponnese or Crete. Expect around 400 to 500 euros for a week of rental, depending on the season and vehicle type. To reach the islands, ferries from Piraeus allow you to board with your car, which greatly simplifies the logistics.

FAQ Greece

Which Greek island to choose for a first family trip?

For a first family trip to Greece, Crete is often the most complete choice. It offers child-friendly beaches, accessible archaeological sites such as the Palace of Knossos, and well-developed tourist infrastructure. Naxos, in the Cyclades, is also an excellent option for its calm sandy beaches and its atmosphere less crowded than Santorini or Mykonos.

Should you rent a car to visit Greece with your family?

Renting a car is highly recommended for exploring mainland Greece or the larger islands like Crete. It offers you complete freedom to discover secluded coves, mountain villages and archaeological sites away from the usual tourist circuits. On the smaller Cyclades islands, a scooter or a quad may be enough, but a car remains more suitable with children.

What budget should you plan for a family vacation in Greece?

The budget varies depending on the season, the type of accommodation, and the destinations chosen. On average, expect between 150 and 250 euros per day for a family of four, with accommodation, meals, and activities included. Greece remains accessible compared to other Mediterranean destinations: local tavernas offer complete meals for 8 to 12 euros per person, and many archaeological sites are free for children under 18.
