Why choose Kos for your next trip?

\n

\n The island of Kos is not a destination like any other. The third largest island in the Dodecanese by area, at 290 km², it captivates with the diversity of what it offers: turquoise water beaches, well-preserved ancient ruins, authentic mountain villages, and a lively nightlife. It's hard to remain indifferent to such a range of possibilities.\n

\n\n

An island between history and the Aegean Sea

\n

\n Kos is above all the birthplace island of Hippocrates, father of modern medicine. This illustrious past can still be read in the stones of the Asclepieion, the ancient sanctuary of healing dedicated to the god Asclepius, perched on the heights 4 km from the city of Kos. As you stroll through the capital, you also discover the remains of the ancient agora, the Roman baths and the medieval Knights' Castle of Rhodes, which proudly overlooks the harbor. Each district tells a different era, from Greek influences to Ottoman traces, and Byzantine heritage.\n

\n\n

A beach for every taste

\n

\n If history draws you, Kos's beaches will keep you there. Tigaki Beach, with its fine sand and shallow waters, is perfectly suited for families. Kardamena offers a more festive atmosphere, while the Kefalos Bay, in the southwest of the island, offers pristine coves for those seeking tranquility. For thrill-seekers, windsurf spots around Marmari benefit from the regular winds of the Aegean Sea. Whatever your desire, Kos has a beach for you.\n

\n\n

What to do during your trip to Kos?

\n

\n Between cultural visits, nautical activities and escapes to the villages, a tailor-made trip to Kos can take a thousand different forms. The essential is to build an itinerary that truly reflects you.\n

\n\n

Historical sites not to be missed

\n

The city of Kos concentrates a large part of the island's heritage. Here are the must-sees to include in your itinerary:

\n
    \n
  • The Asclepieion, an ancient terraced sanctuary offering a breathtaking view of the sea and the Turkish coast;
  • \n
  • The Neratzia Castle, a medieval fortress built by the Knights of Rhodes in the 15th century;
  • \n
  • The ancient agora and the Roman baths, accessible in the city center;
  • \n
  • The Kos Archaeological Museum, which houses statues and mosaics discovered on the island;
  • \n
  • The village of Zia, perched on the slopes of Mount Dikeos at 846 m above sea level, ideal for watching the sunset.
  • \n
\n\n

Activities and experiences to have on the island

\n

\n Beyond visits, Kos lends itself to numerous activities. Renting a bicycle is almost a rite of passage: the relatively flat northern part of the island makes it easy to reach the beaches and archaeological sites on two wheels. For sea lovers, boat trips allow you to reach the neighboring islands of Kalymnos or Nisyros, whose volcanic crater is worth a detour. Gourmets, for their part, should not miss tasting the honey from Antimachia or the wines produced by the local vineyards. In the evening, the town of Kos comes alive around its taverns and bars, for nights as gentle as memorable.\n

\n\n

What is the best time to go to Kos?

\n

\n Kos's Mediterranean climate makes it a pleasant destination over a long season. Here's an overview of the periods according to your preferences:\n

\n\n
\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
PeriodAverage temperaturesIdeal for
April - May18°C to 23°CCultural visits, hiking, calm
June - August26°C to 32°CBeaches, water sports, nightlife
September - October22°C to 27°CSwimming, excursions, fewer crowds
November - March12°C to 16°COff-season stay, reduced prices
\n\n

\n July and August remain the busiest months, with sea at 26°C and a festive atmosphere at its peak. To enjoy the island more calmly, May or September offer an excellent compromise between good weather, still-warm sea and more reasonable crowds. Families with children will especially appreciate the gentle feel of June, before the heat of the peak summer months.\n
