The Trip Planning Magazine to Greece

Why is a cruise in Greece a trip in its own right?

\n

\n Greece is not a destination like any other. With more than 6 000 islands and islets, of which 227 inhabited, it offers a diversity of landscapes, cultures and atmospheres that few countries can match. Navigating between its coasts means in a few hours going from a golden sandy beach to a perched village on a caldera, from a lively port to a wild cove where time seems suspended.\n

\n\n

A journey between sea and civilization

\n

\n What makes cruises in Greece so special is the permanent overlay between nature and history. Ancient Greece is everywhere: in the columns of the Parthenon that dominate Athens, in the ruins of Olympia accessible from Katakolon port, in the remains of Knossos in Crete. Archaeological sites dot every island, offering curious travelers an immersion in one of the most influential civilizations of humanity.\n

\n

\n But Greece is also an incomparable dolce vita. A terrace facing the Aegean Sea, a glass of local wine at sunset, a conversation with a fisherman in a small Ionian port: these simple moments are an integral part of the journey.\n

\n\n

The freedom to sail at your own pace

\n

\n One of the main advantages of a tailor-made cruise in Greece is the ability to compose your itinerary according to your priorities. Some travelers want to explore historical sites in depth; others prefer to alternate between swimming and gastronomic discoveries. With Vialala, our Travel Planners help you build a program that looks like you, by choosing the stops, the duration of each leg and the experiences to be lived aboard the ship as well as on land.\n

\n\n

Which Greek islands to discover on your cruise?

\n

\n The Greek islands form an archipelago of infinite richness. Each has its own identity, its own colors, its own traditions. Here is an overview of the destinations most emblematic for composing your itinerary.\n

\n\n

Santorini, Mykonos and the Cyclades

\n

\n The island of Santorini is undoubtedly the most iconic image of Greece. Perched on the cliffs of an ancient volcanic caldera, the white houses with blue domes of Oia and Fira offer sunsets among the most spectacular in the Mediterranean. 400 meters above the Aegean Sea, the panorama over the caldera is breathtaking. The beaches of black and red sand, vineyards cultivated on volcanic lands and the cobbled alleys complete this unique tableau.\n

\n

\n An hour's sailing away, Mykonos offers a different but equally captivating atmosphere. The old town of Chora, with its labyrinthine alleys, lime-washed chapels and the famous windmills of the 16th century, is etched in everyone's memory. The island attracts both beach lovers and archaeology enthusiasts, who can reach the sacred island of Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage site, in just 30 minutes by boat.\n

\n\n

Rhodes, Corfu and Crete

\n

\n In the southeast of the Aegean Sea, Rhodes is the largest island of the Dodecanese. Its medieval old town, also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the best preserved in Europe. Its 14th-century ramparts, its pebble streets and its palaces bear witness to a dense history, between Knights of Saint John and Ottoman occupation.\n

\n

\n Further west, in the Ionian Sea, Corfu charms with its lush vegetation and its architecture with Venetian influences. Its beaches, such as Paleokastritsa or Agios Gordios, are among the most beautiful in Greece. Crete, for its part, is a continent-island: with its 8 336 km², it offers wild gorges, mountainous plateaus, Minoan palaces and a gastronomy renowned throughout the Mediterranean.\n

\n\n

What is the best time for a cruise in Greece?

\n

\n Greece benefits from a generous Mediterranean climate, with more than 300 days of sunshine per year. That said, each season offers a different experience, and the choice of period depends on your priorities.\n

\n\n
\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
PeriodAverage temperaturesAtmosphereIdeal for
Spring (April-May)18-24°CCalm, nature in bloomHikes, culture, archaeological sites
Summer (June-August)28-35°CLively, festiveBeaches, swimming, nightlife
Early autumn (Sept-Oct)22-28°CSerene, less crowdedGastronomy, discovery, sunsets
Winter (Nov-March)10-16°CVery calmHeritage, authenticity
\n\n

\n Spring and early autumn often represent the best compromise for Greek island cruises: temperatures are pleasant, the sea is calm and historical sites can be visited without the summer crowds. Summer remains the ideal season to enjoy the beaches and the energy of the islands, even if some destinations like Santorini or Mykonos can be very busy in July and August.\n

\n\n

How does Vialala customize your cruise in Greece?

\n

\n A standardized cruise in Greece, with fixed stops and group excursions, is one option among others. At Vialala, we offer a different approach: that of tailor-made travel, designed for you and with you.\n

\n

\n Our Travel Planners are experts in the Greek destination. They know the less-touristy islands worth a detour, the best times to visit an archaeological site without the crowds, the local taverns far from the marked circuits. Together, you build an itinerary that takes into account your desires, your pace and your budget.\n

\n\n

Here is what you can customize with Vialala:

\n
    \n
  • The choice of islands and the duration of each stop according to your interests;
  • \n
  • Onshore activities: diving, hiking, cultural visits, gastronomic tastings;
  • \n
  • Moments of freedom aboard the ship between two stops;
  • \n
  • Accommodations and supplementary services before or after the cruise.
  • \n
\n\n

\n Whether you dream of a week in the Cyclades, a grand tour between sea of the Aegean and the Ionian Sea, or a cruise combined with a stay in Athens, our Travel Planners turn your project into a unique journey. Greece deserves to be discovered in your own way, not according to a pre-established program.\n

FAQ Greece

Is a visa required to go on a cruise in Greece?

No, no visa is required for French nationals. Greece is a member of the European Union and of the Schengen area. A valid identity card is sufficient to enter the territory. It is however recommended to check that your identity document remains valid for the entire duration of your stay, including the days of boarding and disembarkation.

How long does a typical cruise in Greece last?

The duration of a cruise in Greece generally ranges from 7 to 14 days. A week allows you to cover the main islands of the Cyclades or the Dodecanese, while a two-week itinerary offers the possibility to combine several archipelagos, from the Ionian Sea to the Aegean Sea. With Vialala, the duration is entirely tailored to your availability and your desires.
