Why choose a 15-day road trip in the Azores?

The Azores archipelago consists of 9 volcanic islands spread over 600 kilometers in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. A 2-week trip to the Azores allows you to explore this exceptional destination in depth, without the rush of a shorter stay. Unlike traditional tours, a road trip offers you total freedom to discover each island at your own pace.

Your 15 days in the Azores will allow you to visit 4 to 5 different islands, each with its own personality. São Miguel, the largest, reveals its famous Sete Cidades lakes and hot springs of Furnas. Pico invites you to climb the highest peak in Portugal, at 2,351 meters in altitude. Flores, known as the island of flowers, reveals its spectacular waterfalls and wild landscapes.

This duration also gives you time for unpredictable weather, common in this Atlantic region. You can fully enjoy each site without stress, adapting your program according to the weather conditions.

Your personalized road trip itinerary in the Azores archipelago

Organizing a 2-week road trip in the Azores requires careful planning to optimize your travel between islands. Here is a proposed balanced itinerary that maximizes your discoveries.

São Miguel, the essential starting point (4-5 days)

São Miguel is your natural gateway into the archipelago of the Azores. The airport in Ponta Delgada welcomes the majority of international flights, making this island your ideal base camp. Your car rental awaits you upon landing to start the adventure.

The first day, explore Ponta Delgada, the capital of the archipelago. This charming port city of 68,000 inhabitants offers a well-preserved historic center with its colorful facades and city gate from the 18th century. The local market allows you to discover Azorean specialties.

Then head to the viewpoint of Vista do Rei to admire the twin lakes of Sete Cidades. These two lakes, one green and the other blue, occupy a caldera 5 kilometers in diameter. Legend has it that they were formed from the tears of a princess and a shepherd separated by impossible love.

The Lagoa do Fogo, located at the center of the island, will be your next favorite spot. This crater lake, perched at 575 meters in altitude, offers crystal-clear waters in a pristine natural setting. The hike to the viewpoint rewards you with an exceptional panorama.

Furnas deserves a full day with its unique geothermal phenomena. The Terra Nostra park houses a natural thermal pool with iron-rich waters at 40°C, perfect for relaxation after your explorations. Do not miss the cozido das Furnas, a traditional stew cooked for 6 hours in volcanic soil.

Terceira and Pico, the volcanic heart (4-5 days)

Terceira welcomes you with its rural landscapes outlined by black volcanic stone walls. Angra do Heroísmo, a UNESCO World Heritage site, reflects the historical importance of the archipelago on Atlantic trade routes. This city of 12,000 inhabitants retains a remarkable historic center with Renaissance palaces and baroque churches.

The Algar do Carvão is the highlight of Terceira. This volcanic chimney, 90 meters deep, allows you to descend into the heart of an ancient volcano. The geological formations and vegetation lining the walls create a uniquely mysterious atmosphere.

Pico beckons for the next stage of your road trip. This triangular island of 447 square kilometers is home to Mount Pico, the highest point in Portugal. Climbing this dormant stratovolcano, last erupted in 1720, is a 7 to 8 hour round-trip challenge, rewarded with a panoramic view of the entire Azores archipelago.

The vineyard landscapes of Pico also deserve your attention. These vines, planted on black lava, protected by basalt walls, produce unique wines listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Criação Velha region spans 987 hectares of vineyards shaped by man since the 15th century.

Flores and Faial, the wild adventure (4-5 days)

Flores, the westernmost island in Europe, holds extraordinary surprises. This island of 143 square kilometers and 3,400 inhabitants offers a preserved wild nature with its 20 volcanic lakes and spectacular waterfalls. The Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro reveals a 20-meter waterfall in a natural amphitheater of greenery.

The west coast of Flores unveils vertiginous cliffs, 400 meters high, sculpted by the Atlantic Ocean. The Lagoas Negra e Comprida, two twin lakes perched at 550 meters in altitude, offer a peaceful setting for a contemplative hike.

Faial complements your discovery with the charming town of Horta. This historic port of 6,800 inhabitants has welcomed sailors crossing the Atlantic for centuries. The famous Peter Café Sport retains testimonies of thousands of sailors from around the world.

The caldera of Faial, 2 kilometers wide and 400 meters deep, impresses with its dimensions. The Capelinhos volcano, born in 1957 during an underwater eruption, added 2.4 square kilometers to the island's area. This unique lunar landscape testifies to the geological youth of the archipelago.

Organizing your road trip in the Azores: practical tips

The success of your trip to the Azores relies on meticulous preparation, especially for the logistical aspects specific to this isolated archipelago.

Car rental and inter-island transport

Each island requires its own car rental, as vehicles cannot be transported from island to island. Reserve your cars at least 3 months in advance, especially for the summer period. Rates vary from 25 to 45 euros per day depending on the season and model chosen.

SATA Azores Airlines holds the exclusivity of inter-island flights with fixed rates. Count 60 to 90 euros per trip depending on the distance. Flights last between 25 minutes and 1h25 maximum. Book all your inter-island flights simultaneously to secure your itinerary.

Atlanticoline's maritime connections offer an economical but longer alternative. The journey São Miguel-Flores lasts 15 hours versus 1h25 by plane. These ferries operate mainly from June to September with schedules varying according to the weather.

Budget and accommodations for 2 weeks in the Azores

Your budget for 15 days in the Azores varies according to your accommodation and activity choices. Here is a realistic estimate for two people:

Expense Item Budget Economy Budget Comfort
International flights 500€ 800€
Inter-island flights 600€ 600€
Car rentals 450€ 650€
Accommodations 700€ 1400€
Dining 600€ 900€
Activities 200€ 400€
Total for 2 people 3050€ 4750€

Accommodations should be reserved mandatorily 4 to 6 months in advance. Rural quintas offer excellent value with rates of 40 to 80 euros per night. Charm hotels in city centers have rates of 80 to 150 euros depending on the season.

Azorean dining remains affordable with traditional dishes between 8 and 15 euros. Local specialties include cozido das Furnas, grilled limpets, and cheeses from São Jorge. Local markets offer fresh products at reduced prices.

May-June and September-October offer an excellent compromise between favorable weather and moderate attendance.

How many islands can one visit during a 2-week road trip in the Azores?

A 15-day road trip allows you to comfortably visit 4 to 5 islands of the Azores archipelago. This duration gives you 3 to 4 days per island, enough to discover the major sites without hurry. Absolutely, especially for the period from May to October. Book your inter-island flights and car rentals at least 3 to 4 months in advance.
