Cities to Kenya

Why choose Kenya for your family holidays?

Traveling to Kenya with your children represents much more than just a trip: it's an extraordinary adventure that will mark your whole family. This East African country, spanning 580,367 km², offers a variety of landscapes and experiences perfectly suited to families. From the legendary Masai Mara National Park to the pristine beaches of Diani Beach, passing through the snowy peaks of Mount Kenya peaking at 5,199 meters, each region reveals its own wonders.

Your children will be amazed by the richness of the Kenyan fauna, which houses over 1,100 species of birds and an exceptional concentration of wild animals. The warm welcome of the Kenyans, especially kind to children, turns every meeting into a special moment. The country's tourist infrastructure, developed over decades, guarantees comfort and safety for your stay in Kenya.

Kenya's geographical position, crossed by the equator, ensures a pleasant climate all year round with average temperatures fluctuating between 20°C and 28°C depending on the regions. This climate stability allows you to organize your family trip at any time, although certain seasons offer unique natural shows like the great migration between July and October.

Must-dos during a stay in Kenya with children

Your trip to Kenya will reveal unique experiences specially designed to amaze both young and old.

Family-friendly safaris

Going on a safari in Kenya is the highlight of your family trip. Our Travel Planners organize safaris perfectly adapted to the rhythm of children, with spacious 4x4 vehicles and regular breaks. The Masai Mara National Park, spanning 1,510 km², is home to the highest concentration of lions in Africa, with approximately 850 to 900 individuals.

Your children will discover the famous Big Five in their natural habitat: lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffaloes. The Ol Pejeta reserve, located at the foot of Mount Kenya, offers a different approach with its conservation programs. This 360 km² reserve houses the last two northern white rhinos in the world, an emotional encounter that sensitizes children to nature protection.

Lake Nakuru, designated a national park since 1968, dazzles with its millions of flamingos that color its shores. This natural spectacle, visible from the observation points, is particularly fascinating for young travelers. Morning safaris, starting around 6:30 AM, allow observing animals in their most intense activity before the heat intensifies.

Cultural encounters and playful activities

Beyond safaris, your Kenya family trip is enriched by authentic encounters with local communities. Masai villages, a semi-nomadic pastoral people numbering about 1 million individuals, welcome families for fascinating cultural exchanges. Your children participate in traditional dances, discover local crafts, and learn ancestral survival techniques in the savannah.

Playful activities multiply depending on the regions visited. At Hell's Gate, the only national park in Kenya where walking is allowed, your children explore the gorges that inspired the setting of The Lion King. Amboseli National Park offers spectacular views of Kilimanjaro, whose Uhuru Peak rises to 5,895 meters in neighboring Tanzania.

The Kenyan coasts reveal another face of the country with Diani Beach and its 17 kilometers of white sand bordered by the Indian Ocean. This beach, regularly ranked among the most beautiful in Africa, offers family-friendly water activities: snorkeling in coral reefs, dolphin watching, and traditional dhow rides.

Organizing your Kenya family trip with our Travel Planners

Our local experts design your custom trip considering the specific needs of your family.

Family-friendly accommodations and logistics

Our Travel Planners select accommodations perfectly suited to families, combining comfort and authenticity. Family lodges offer connecting rooms or family suites that can accommodate up to 6 people. Some establishments offer special programs for children with supervised activities while parents relax.

Authentic bush camps, set in the heart of reserves, provide total immersion in African nature. These tented accommodations are equipped with all necessary amenities: comfortable beds, private bathrooms, and spacious living areas. Full board includes menus tailored to children's tastes, with vegetarian options and mild local specialties.

Transportation is organized in air-conditioned 4x4 vehicles with open roofs to optimize animal observation. Our drivers-guides, trained in welcoming families, adjust the pace of travel to the needs of children. Distances between sites are calculated to minimize fatigue: a maximum of 3 hours of driving per day with regular breaks.

Ideal duration and period

The optimal duration for a family trip to Kenya is between 10 and 14 days, allowing you to explore various ecosystems without rushing. This period generally includes 2 to 3 national parks, a cultural immersion, and a few days of relaxation on the coast.

The following table presents the best periods according to your priorities:

Period Advantages Disadvantages Recommended for
January-March Dry climate, pleasant temperatures Tourist influx Families with young children
June-October Great migration, concentrated wildlife High season, high prices Optimal wildlife observation
November-December Advantageous rates, fewer tourists Possible light rains Tight budgets

During European school holidays, especially July-August and December-January, early booking becomes essential. Our Travel Planners recommend planning your trip 4 to 6 months in advance to guarantee the availability of the best family accommodations.

Budget and practical tips for a successful trip

Organizing a trip to Kenya for a family requires budget planning adapted to your expectations and the composition of your group.

The average budget for a family of 4 people (2 adults + 2 children) varies between €4,500 and €8,000 depending on the level of services chosen. This estimate includes international flights from Europe, full-board accommodation, safaris with a French-speaking guide, transfers, and entrance fees to national parks. Children under 12 generally benefit from substantial discounts, sometimes up to 50% on accommodations.

Entry formalities have been simplified since January 2024 with the introduction of the eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) that replaces the traditional visa. This electronic authorization, costing $35 per person regardless of age, is obtained online 72 hours before departure. The passport must be valid for 6 months after the entry date to Kenya.

Regarding health, no vaccination is mandatory for travelers from Europe, but yellow fever may be required if you transit through certain African countries. Our Travel Planners assist you with all these administrative procedures to simplify your preparation.

Tipping is an integral part of Kenyan culture. Plan about $10 per day per guide, $5 for drivers, and $2-3 per day for lodge staff. This practice, called "asante" (thank you in Swahili), reflects your satisfaction and directly contributes to local development.

The recommended equipment for your family safari includes neutral-colored clothing, a hat, sunscreen SPF 50+, child-friendly binoculars, and a camera with spare batteries. Temperatures can drop to 10°C during morning safaris, especially at altitude, necessitating warm clothing.

At Vialala, we understand that each family has its own expectations and constraints. Our Travel Planners create custom itineraries that adapt to the age of your children, your interests, and your budget. This personalized approach ensures an unforgettable trip where each family member finds their happiness, from the smallest ones thrilled by their first elephant sighting to teenagers passionate about wildlife photography.

FAQ Kenya

From what age can you take a child on a safari in Kenya?

Children can participate in a safari in Kenya from the age of 3, although some lodges accept babies. Safaris are perfectly suited for families with safe vehicles, flexible schedules, and activities designed to stimulate the curiosity of the youngest. Our Travel Planners recommend itineraries with short journeys and frequent breaks for the comfort of children.

What are the health risks for children in Kenya?

Kenya presents few health risks for children with basic precautions. Bottled water is available everywhere, lodges maintain high standards of hygiene, and medical facilities are adequate in tourist areas. Malaria exists in some coastal regions but the high-altitude safari zones are generally free of it. A medical consultation before departure can tailor recommendations to the age of your children.

How to keep children occupied during long journeys between parks?

Our Travel Planners organize itineraries to limit travel to a maximum of 3 hours per day with regular stops. The 4x4 vehicles offer plenty of opportunities to observe en route: giraffes along the roads, colorful villages, and varied landscapes. We recommend taking travel games, books on African wildlife, and a travel journal for your children to draw their daily discoveries.
