Destinations on Sardinia

Why choose a Sardinia cruise?

\n

Sardinia is not a destination like any other. With its 1,900 kilometres of coastline, its rose granite cliffs, its perched villages and preserved seabed, it alone embodies all that the western Mediterranean has to offer at its best. Sailing around the island means gaining access to coves inaccessible by road, watching a sunset from the open sea and living each day as a new discovery.

\n\n

An island with a thousand faces

\n

To the north, the turquoise waters of the Costa Smeralda rival the Caribbean's finest beaches. Farther east, the Maddalena archipelago, a national park, reveals white-sand beaches nestled between granite islets. The island's center remains wild: cork oaks, high plateaus and nuragic remains testify to a civilization more than 3,500 years old. A Sardinia cruise lets you move from one universe to another in a few hours of sailing, never having to choose between sea and culture.

\n\n

Sardinia and Corsica, a winning duo

\n

Many travelers combine the two islands in a single cruise. Sardinia and Corsica share the same crystal-clear waters, but each has a distinctly different identity. From southern Corsica, the Bonifacio Strait offers a mythical passage between the two lands, punctuated by the Lavezzi islets and their turquoise lagoons. This mixed circuit, of an average duration of 7 to 8 days, is ideal for those who wish to explore the Mediterranean in all its diversity.

\n\n

What are the must-see stops on a Sardinia cruise?

\n

Sardinia cruises offer a range of remarkable stops, each with its own atmosphere. Here's an overview of the most prized stops according to itineraries.

\n\n

The north of the island: Costa Smeralda and Maddalena archipelago

\n

Porto Cervo, a true symbol of Costa Smeralda, concentrates luxury yachts and Mediterranean architecture in an exceptional natural setting. A few nautical miles away, the Maddalena archipelago deserves a night at anchor to enjoy absolute calm and waters of a deep blue. Budelli Island, with its famous Spiaggia Rosa, and the coves of Caprera are among the most photographed spots in the entire Mediterranean Sea. Further southeast, Tavolara Island raises its limestone cliffs to a height of 565 meters, offering a striking panorama from offshore.

\n\n

The south and west: Cagliari, Alghero and their treasures

\n

Cagliari, the capital of the Italian island, often forms the starting or ending point of Sardinia cruises. Its medieval Castello district, its archaeological museums and nearby fine-sand beaches make it a complete stopover, between heritage and moments of relaxation. To the west, Alghero surprises with its Catalan character: ramparts, cobbled streets and basilicas testify to a distinctive history. The Neptune Caves, accessible by sea, are a must for anyone sailing in these waters. Porto Torres, further north, allows you to reach Platamona's sandy beaches or explore the Roman remains at the Turris Libisonis archaeological site.

\n\n

What formula to choose for navigating Sardinia?

\n

Sailboat, catamaran, cruise ship... the options are numerous to live a Sardinia cruise according to your desires and your budget. Each formula offers a different experience, and the choice depends as much on the comfort sought as on the type of itinerary envisaged.

\n\n

A sailing cruise attracts travelers seeking authenticity and freedom. The sailing boat allows anchoring in coves inaccessible to large ships, sailing quietly and living up close to the elements. It's an immersive experience, often shared in a small group, which requires some flexibility but offers in return unforgettable memories.

\n\n

The catamaran in Sardinia, for its part, combines stability and comfort. With its wide living spaces, its forward nets conducive to moments of relaxation and its low fuel consumption, it is particularly well suited to families or groups of friends. A night at anchor in a deserted cove, rocked by the lapping of the waves, remains one of the most memorable experiences this destination can offer.

What is the best time to go on a Sardinia cruise?

\n

The Sardinia coast enjoys a Mediterranean climate characterized by hot, dry summers and mild but windy winters. For a cruise, the ideal window runs from May to September, with nuances depending on your priorities.

September remains often the preferred period for experienced sailors: the sea is still warm, winds are favorable and sandy beaches regain their tranquility. For families with children, July and August offer optimal swimming conditions despite the crowds. Whatever the period chosen, our Travel Planners Vialala will advise you on itineraries best suited to the season to fully enjoy your Sardinia cruise.

FAQ Sardinia

From which port can you depart for a Sardinia cruise?

Several European cities serve as starting points to reach Sardinia by sea. Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa or Civitavecchia are the ports most frequently used. Once on the island, Cagliari and Olbia are the two main embarkation ports for local cruises. Our Vialala Travel Planners help you choose the most practical option depending on your place of residence.

Do you need sailing experience for a sailing cruise in Sardinia?

You can participate as much as you want in steering the boat, or simply enjoy the scenery. It's an excellent way to discover sailing in an exceptional setting, safely.

Can we combine a Sardinia cruise with other Mediterranean destinations?

Absolutely. Sardinia is perfectly suited for combined itineraries, especially with Corsica, Sicily, or the Italian coasts. A 10- to 14-day itinerary allows you to explore Sardinia and southern Corsica in a single crossing. At Vialala, our Travel Planners design tailor-made itineraries that integrate several destinations according to your preferences and the duration of your trip.
