Finland proves to be an exceptional family travel destination, offering a variety of experiences suitable for all ages. This Northern European country fascinates with its striking contrasts: from the snowy expanses of Lapland to the sunny archipelagos of the Baltic Sea and the 188,000 lakes that dot its 338,424 km² territory.
Traveling to Finland with your children means offering them the opportunity to discover a preserved nature where vast landscapes reign supreme. Boreal forests cover 75% of the Finnish territory, creating an extraordinary natural playground for families seeking adventure. Our Travel Planners know this destination's specifics perfectly and will adapt your stay in Finland to meet the needs of each family member.
The Finnish winter transforms the country into a real fairy tale. Snowy landscapes offer a magical setting for numerous activities: dog sledding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or even aurora hunting. The polar night, which ranges from November to January beyond the Arctic Circle, creates a unique atmosphere where the auroras dance in the arctic sky.
Summer unveils another face of Finland for families. The midnight sun illuminates the nights of June and July, allowing you to fully enjoy outdoor activities: hiking in national parks, boating on the lakes, exploring the islands of the Baltic coast. This season offers pleasant temperatures, ranging between 15 and 25°C, ideal for discovering the Finnish lifestyle in harmony with nature.
Lapland for families: the unforgettable Arctic experience
Finnish Lapland represents the very essence of a family trip to Finland in search of winter magic. This region of the far North extends over 100,000 km² beyond the Arctic Circle, offering unique experiences orchestrated with expertise by our Travel Planners.
Must-do winter activities in Lapland
Rovaniemi, the official capital of Lapland, is the ideal starting point for your family stay in Finland. This city of 63,000 inhabitants is home to the famous Santa Claus Village, located exactly on the Arctic Circle. Your children will experience an unforgettable moment meeting Santa Claus in his official office, surrounded by his elves and the magical atmosphere of Christmas in Rovaniemi.
The Ranua Wildlife Park, located 80 kilometers from Rovaniemi, allows families to discover Arctic wildlife in a natural 200-hectare environment. Polar bears, lynx, wolverines, and Arctic foxes thrive in this unique sanctuary, offering an exciting educational experience for children.
Dog sled safaris are one of Lapland's flagship family activities. These excursions, suited for children as young as 4 years old, allow you to safely traverse snowy expanses. Experienced mushers introduce both adults and children to this millennia-old tradition, creating unforgettable memories in the heart of Lappish nature.
The ultimate experience of a winter trip to Finland is aurora hunting. These luminous phenomenons, visible from September to March, light up the night sky with extraordinary colors. Our Travel Planners organize specialized outings in areas free from light pollution, maximizing your chances of observing the natural spectacle.
Summer activities under the midnight sun
Summer transforms Lapland for families into an exceptional adventure playground. The midnight sun, visible from May to July, offers endless days to explore this unique region. Summer temperatures, ranging between 10 and 20°C, allow a variety of outdoor activities.
The Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park spans 1,020 km² and offers hiking trails suitable for families. The marked trails allow you to discover the Arctic tundra, marshlands, and the rounded hills called tunturi. The air, known as Europe's cleanest, offers a unique breathing experience.
The water-based activities on Lapland's lakes appeal to families seeking a cool retreat. Canoeing, kayaking, and fishing are practiced in a majestic setting, surrounded by birch and pine forests. Lake Inari, covering an area of 1,040 km², is Finland's third-largest lake and offers endless exploration possibilities.
Southern Finland: nature and culture within family reach
Southern Finland reveals a more temperate side of the country, combining cultural riches and natural wonders. This region, more accessible and less extreme climatically, is perfectly suited for families with young children or those wanting to discover Finland gently.
Helsinki and its urban treasures
Helsinki, the capital with 656,000 inhabitants, offers a perfect introduction to Finnish culture. The city is easily explored with family, thanks to its efficient public transport and numerous green spaces. The market square (Kauppatori) allows you to taste local specialties: smoked salmon, pickled herring and the delicious Finnish pastries like korvapuusti.
Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is reached by a 15-minute ferry from Helsinki. This 18th-century island fortress provides an exceptional historical setting for a family stroll, with its walls, museums, and gardens. Exploring its six interconnected islands is a captivating adventure for children.
The Katajanokka district charms with its Art Nouveau architecture and cobblestone streets. Families particularly appreciate the Uspenski Cathedral, recognizable by its golden domes, and the various urban parks where children can play.
National parks and the lake region
The Finnish Lake District, named Saimaa after its largest lake (4,400 km²), forms the natural heart of the country. This area of 60,000 km² includes more than 55,000 lakes, creating a unique water maze worldwide. Our Travel Planners organize tailored stays in this region, adapted to each family's desires.
Hossa National Park, established in 2017, spans 110 km² and offers 90 kilometers of marked trails. This family-friendly park provides routes suitable for all levels, from 2-kilometer walks to several-day hikes. The Värikallio rock paintings, dating back 3,500 years, fascinate both young and old.
Water activities on Lake Saimaa allow you to discover this unique ecosystem. Renting lakeside cottages, traditional boat trips, family fishing, and swimming in the crystal-clear waters are typical summer day activities. The region also shelters the Saimaa ringed seal, an endangered endemic species that families can observe with a specialized guide.
