Explore the Norwegian capital. Located in the south-east of Norway, Oslo is nestled at the bottom of the fjord of the same name. City of history and culture, it is also connected to the nature that surrounds it. Elected European Green Capital in 2019, it is at the forefront of the environment protection. It is also a sporting city, famous for its athletics meeting but above all for the winter sports that can be practiced just a few minutes from the city center. Day 1 : Arrival in Oslo

Arrival at Oslo airport

The connection between the airport and the city center of Oslo is provided by train (flytoget). The connection can also be made by taking the train of a regular line, a little slower (30 minutes against twenty minutes). So count about ten euros less than with the flytoget.

Useful info (public transportation)

Oslo is very well endowed with public transport. There are regular tram, bus and boat lines. Its metro, which serves a large part of the city, is very easy and pleasant to use. Tickets can be purchased at several points of sale (ticket offices, Narvesen kiosks, tourist office, etc.) but are free with the Oslo Pass. Oslo is not a very big city despite the large size of its municipality, it is relatively easy to get around and visit it on foot or by bike.

Useful info (food)

For your meals, catering prices are quite expensive compared to other countries. For an average budget, treat yourself to one or two outings to a restaurant. You will find many mini markets where you can buy your provisions (the concept of supermarket hardly exists in Norway). Norwegians often eat toast (matpakke), so you will find a lot of sliced ​​bread and all kinds of foods to spread on it. Among the curiosities to taste: brunost (brown cheese with a mild and sweet flavor), kaviar (fish roe paste in a tube), fiskekaker (kinds of savory pancakes with fish) and kanelboller (rolled cakes cinnamon, even better reheated and with Chantilly cream).

Day 2 : Discovering the city

Karl Johans gate and the Royal Palace

After walking up Karl Johans gate, the lively pedestrian street where the Parliament is located, you will find the Royal Palace. You will meet there the equestrian statue of King Charles John (Karl Johan) and the royal guards, then stroll in the very flowery park of the castle (Slottsparken).

Oslo Pass

The Oslo Pass provides discounts and free entry to museums and tourist attractions. Public transport is free and price reductions are possible for excursions, activities and restaurants. Oslo Pass prices vary depending on age and validity. For 72 hours, which is the maximum duration, the price of 82 € for an adult. The Oslo Pass can be ordered online and then returned to the Oslo tourist office, or bought on site at certain points of sale (tourist office, hotels, museums, etc.). It can also be purchased by downloading the Oslo Pass app.

Frogner Park

Frogner Park is the largest park in Oslo. It is famous for the many sculptures by artist Gustav Vigeland, allegories of life and family.

Walk on the harbour

From Tjuvholmen to Sørenga, an urban path allows you to stroll along the quays. You will find museums (the Astrup Fearnley Museum, the Nobel Museum, the Munch Museum), restaurants, cafes and above all the Opera House, a marble iceberg rising from the water. If you're brave, end the day with a swim in the fjord in Sørenga. For museum visits, admission is free with the Oslo Pass.

Day 3 : Holmenkollen and Ekeberg

Holmenkollen

Holmenkollen is the Mecca of Nordic skiing. Each year, this hill in the north of Oslo welcomes the best athletes in the world in cross-country skiing, biathlon, ski jumping and Nordic combined. In summer, the ski jump offers a wonderful panorama of the city and the fjord. Take the opportunity to try the ski jumping simulator and visit the ski museum.

Mathallen

Discover the Oslo indoor market and its many shops and restaurants. All the best of Norwegian gastronomy, but also of the whole world, can be found there. It's up to you to choose your table.

Ekeberg

Ekeberg Park, in the south-east of the city, is perched on a hill, facing the fjord. You will come across sculptures by contemporary and international artists as well as testimonies from history. Traces of villages dating from the Neolithic period can still be found there, while the hill had served as a base for the German invader during World War II.

Day 4 : Bygdøy peninsula

Bygdøy

The Bygdøy peninsula is located southwest of Oslo. It is regularly served by buses. This piece of countryside is a residential area where there are several museums. It's up to you to choose which ones you want to discover. Entrances are free with the Oslo Pass

The Folklore useum

The Folklore Museum is an open-air museum where typical dwellings of different regions of Norway from the Middle Ages to modern times are reconstructed. Comedians in costume bring to life the daily life of Norwegians of the last centuries.

The Viking Ship Museum

Right next to the Folklore Museum, the Viking Ship Museum tells the story of these famous Scandinavian warriors and explorers who came to haunt the coasts of all Europe but also America. Unparalleled sailors, they left us numerous testimonies of their know-how, including the drakkar exhibited in the heart of the museum.

The Fram Museum

At the Fram Museum, you will discover this ship which was notably used for polar explorers Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen. Thus, he skimmed the cold waters of the Arctic and Antarctic.

The Kon-Tiki Museum

The Kon-Tiki Museum houses the boat of the same name, which allowed explorer Thor Heyerdahl to cross the Pacific Ocean from Peru to the Tuamotu Islands. Accomplished on a relatively sketchy boat, the purpose of this crossing was to prove that populations from South America were able to reach islands in the Pacific a long time ago.

Day 5 : The Future Library: literature and ecology

The Deichmann Library

Inaugurated in 2019, the new Deichmann library is located next to the Opera. It presents the artistic project of the Future Library: from 2014, manuscripts by international authors are submitted each year until 2114, when the books will finally be published.

The Nordmarka forest

Continuation of the discovery of the Future Library with a trip to the Nordmarka forest, where the manuscripts are handed over. From Frognerseteren or Sognsvann, easily accessible by metro, join the forest of the Future Library. Take advantage of this hike to take in a deep breath of fresh air just 20 minutes from downtown.

Day 6 : Departure from Oslo

Back to Oslo airport

Good bye Oslo

For the last day, take a trip to the souvenir shops of Oslo. If you have enough budget (prices are higher in Norway than in other countries), you will find several souvenir shops on the Karl Johans gate. Bring home a troll who will protect your house from evil spirits.
