Merci

Why choose Lanzarote for your fifteen-day roadtrip in Spain?

Lanzarote proves to be an exceptional destination for your two-week trip in Spain. This Canary Island, located just 125 kilometers off the Moroccan coast, offers a complete change of scenery without leaving Europe. With its 845 square kilometers of spectacular volcanic landscapes, the island promises a unique experience where volcanic nature meets fine sandy beaches with turquoise waters.

Lanzarote's subtropical climate is a major advantage for organizing your trip. Temperatures range between 20°C and 28°C all year round, allowing you to fully enjoy your stay regardless of the season. This meteorological stability makes the Canary Islands a premium destination to escape the European winter harshness.

The island of Lanzarote is fascinating with its striking contrasts. You will discover over 300 volcanic cones that shape unique lunar landscapes in the world. These fields of petrified lava, witnesses of the eruptions that occurred between 1730 and 1736, create a surreal setting where the black volcanic rock contrasts with the Atlantic Ocean. This volcanic land also houses extraordinary vineyards, where vines grow in craters dug right into the lava to protect them from the wind.

Your roadtrip to Lanzarote will lead you to discover exceptional architectural heritage. César Manrique, a visionary artist from the island, has preserved the authenticity of villages by imposing traditional constructions with white houses. His works, perfectly integrated into the volcanic landscapes, turn each visit into a memorable artistic experience.

Your roadtrip itinerary in Lanzarote: two weeks of volcanic adventures

A fifteen-day trip to Lanzarote allows you to deeply explore the island while savoring each discovery. This ideal duration offers you the opportunity to alternate cultural visits, hiking in volcanoes, and relaxation moments on the most beautiful beaches of the Canary archipelago.

First week: discovery of the essentials

Your adventure begins by exploring the south of Lanzarote, a region that concentrates the most emblematic sites of the island. Playa Blanca is an excellent starting point to reach the famous Papagayo beach. This beach with crystal-clear waters, nestled in a protected cove, provides an idyllic setting for your first swim. Access via a 3-kilometer dirt road adds an adventurous dimension to this discovery.

Timanfaya National Park is an absolute must-see during your stay in Lanzarote. This exceptional site, nicknamed the Montañas del Fuego, houses 25 volcanoes over 51 square kilometers of lunar landscapes. The guided bus tour reveals the still-active geothermal power of the subsoil, with spectacular demonstrations where water instantly transforms into a geyser. The El Diablo restaurant, designed by César Manrique, offers a unique culinary experience where dishes are cooked using natural volcanic heat.

Your itinerary then leads you to the geological wonders of the west coast. El Golfo reveals the famous Charco de los Clicos, a striking emerald green lagoon nestled in an ancient volcanic crater. The exceptional color of this body of water results from the presence of microscopic algae and sulfur. A few minutes by car, Los Hervideros offers a fascinating natural spectacle where the ocean rushes into caves carved by the erosion of volcanic rock.

The Janubio salt flats complete this discovery of Lanzarote's natural heritage. These salt marshes, the largest in the Canary Islands, create a particularly photogenic geometric colored landscape at the end of the day. The traditional exploitation of sea salt perpetuates an ancestral know-how in a preserved natural setting.

The La Geria region deserves a full day of your trip. These unique volcanic vineyards in the world demonstrate the ingenuity of Lanzarote's inhabitants. Each vine grows in a hollow dug into the volcanic earth, protected by a wall of volcanic stones. This ancient technique allows for vine cultivation despite constant winds and the arid climate. Bodega La Geria offers wine tastings in an exceptional setting facing the lunar landscapes of the island.

Second week: thorough exploration and authentic experiences

Your second week of roadtrip in Lanzarote reveals the hidden treasures of the north of the island. The village of Teguise, the former capital, captivates with its preserved colonial architecture and its cobblestone streets lined with white houses with green shutters. The Sunday artisanal market transforms this historic town into a place of authentic exchanges where you can discover local crafts.

Haria, nicknamed the valley of a thousand palm trees, offers a striking contrast with the arid landscapes of the south. This verdant oasis is home to the birthplace of César Manrique, now transformed into a cultural foundation. The visit to this emblematic place reveals the artistic philosophy of the man who shaped the modern visual identity of Lanzarote.

The Mirador del Rio is one of the most spectacular viewpoints of your trip. Perched at an altitude of 475 meters on the cliffs of Famara, this viewpoint designed by César Manrique offers a breathtaking view of the island of La Graciosa and the Chinijo archipelago. This small wild island, accessible by ferry from Orzola, is worth a day trip to discover its pristine beaches and preserved landscapes.

The Jameos del Agua is one of César Manrique's most accomplished creations. This cultural complex set up in a natural lava tunnel houses an auditorium, a restaurant, and a deep blue underground pool. Subtle lighting reveals the beauty of the volcanic formations while creating a unique fairy-tale atmosphere.

The Cueva de los Verdes completes this discovery of Lanzarote's underground volcanic heritage. This 6-kilometer-long lava tunnel, formed by the lava flows of the Corona volcano, can be visited over 1 kilometer with a guide. Light shows reveal cathedral-sized rooms sculpted by molten lava.

Your stay also leads you to the authentic beaches of the north. Caleta de Famara captivates with its immense 6-kilometer-long golden sand beach, dominated by the impressive cliffs of the Risco de Famara. This beach, a surfer's paradise, offers memorable sunsets facing the island of La Graciosa. The small volcanic stone shelters, built by the inhabitants to protect themselves from the wind, testify to the ingenious adaptation to the natural environment.

Punta Mujeres reveals another face of Lanzarote with its natural pools carved into the volcanic rock. These sea water basins, renewed with each tide, offer an original alternative to traditional swimming. The fishing village retains its authenticity with its white houses facing the ocean.

Organizing your trip: practical tips for a successful stay

The success of your roadtrip in Lanzarote depends on meticulous organization adapted to the specifics of this volcanic destination. Renting a car is essential for exploring the island freely. The roads of Lanzarote, generally in excellent condition, allow easy access to all points of interest. Some sites like Papagayo beach, however, require taking dirt roads, making it preferable to rent a robust vehicle.

The choice of your accommodation greatly influences your travel experience. Puerto del Carmen, a dynamic seaside resort on the south coast, offers a wide range of hotels and restaurants. Costa Teguise, more family-friendly, appeals with its sheltered beaches and proximity to the airport. For a more authentic experience, the inland villages like Teguise or Haria offer charming accommodations in restored traditional houses.

Here are the recommended periods for your trip to Lanzarote according to your priorities:

Period Advantages Disadvantages Average Temperature
December-February Mild climate, fewer tourists, advantageous prices Colder sea (18°C), more frequent winds 20-22°C
March-May Ideal temperatures, blooming, moderate prices Increasing crowd in May 22-25°C
June-August Warm sea, long days, summer atmosphere High crowd, high prices, intense heat 26-28°C
September-November Still warm sea, less crowded, decreasing prices Risk of calima (sand wind) 24-26°C

Lanzarote's gastronomy enriches your cultural discovery. Local specialties reflect the volcanic and maritime influence of the island. Papas arrugadas, small wrinkled potatoes cooked in sea water and served with mojo, perfectly accompany freshly grilled fish. Wines from La Geria, grown on volcanic soil, develop unique mineral aromas that sublime the oceanic flavors.

The island offers numerous activities to enrich your stay. Water sports benefit from the exceptional conditions of Lanzarote: surfing on the beaches of Famara, diving in the crystal-clear waters of the south, sailing excursions to the island of La Graciosa. Hiking in volcanoes provides spectacular panoramas, especially the climb to the Caldera Blanca, a crater 1,200 meters in diameter reaching an altitude of 458 meters.
