Cities in Sicily

Why choose Sicily for your two-week road trip in Italy?

Sicily stands out as a top choice for your 15-day road trip in Italy. This fascinating island of 25,711 km² offers a diversity of landscapes and experiences rarely matched in the Mediterranean. Your days will alternate between discovering exceptional archaeological sites, relaxing on beaches with turquoise waters, and exploring medieval villages perched on verdant hills.

Your journey in Sicily will take you from the smoking slopes of Mount Etna, standing at 3,357 meters, to the white cliffs of Scala dei Turchi. Baroque culture enthusiasts will find their bliss in the cities of Modica, Ragusa, or Syracuse, while ancient history fans can explore the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, a true open-air museum.

Sicilian cuisine also represents another major asset of your road trip. Between crispy arancini, ricotta cannoli, and local wines, each meal becomes an authentic experience. Our Travel Planners know the best local addresses and will guide you towards unforgettable culinary experiences, away from tourist traps.

Organizing your road trip in Sicily: essentials to know

Preparing your two-week road trip in Sicily requires meticulous planning to fully enjoy this exceptional destination. Our experts accompany you at every planning step to transform your trip into a tailor-made experience.

Car rental and driving in Sicily

Renting a car is the ideal solution to explore Sicily at your own pace. The main rental companies are present at the airports in Palermo and Catania, your most likely starting points. Count on approximately 35 to 50 euros per day for a small car, perfect for navigating narrow city centers.

Driving in Sicily does not present any major difficulties, but some specific aspects deserve your attention. ZTL areas (Limited Traffic Zones) in city centers are off-limits to unauthorized vehicles, subject to hefty fines. Main roads are in excellent condition, while some secondary roads leading to nature reserves may be more winding.

Our Travel Planners will provide you with a detailed map of ZTLs and the best routes to reach each stage of your journey smoothly. They will also indicate the most convenient parking spots in each visited city.

When to go and how long to stay

The ideal period for your road trip spans from May to June and from September to October. These months offer pleasant weather with temperatures ranging between 20 and 28°C, perfect for balancing cultural visits and relaxation on the beaches. You will also avoid the summer high season and its crowds of tourists.

Fifteen days is the optimal duration to discover the riches of Sicily without rushing. This period allows you to spend 2 to 3 nights in each region, enough time to immerse yourself in the local atmosphere and fully savor each experience.

Budget and accommodations

Your budget for a 15-day road trip in Sicily varies depending on your comfort requirements. Count on about 1,200 to 1,800 euros per person, including car rental, accommodations, meals, and visits. Accommodations offer great diversity: from charming family guest rooms to villas with swimming pools, and charming hotels in historical centers.

Our Travel Planners select for you authentic accommodations that enhance your travel experience. They favor establishments run by locals passionate about their region.

Detailed itinerary for 15 days of road trip in Sicily

This carefully designed itinerary lets you discover the must-sees of Sicily while preserving moments of spontaneity. Each stage has been planned to optimize your movements and maximize your discoveries.

First week: the west and north of the island

Your Sicilian adventure begins in Palermo, a vibrant capital where Arab, Norman, and Baroque influences mingle. Devote your first three days to exploring this fascinating city: stroll through the alleys of the historic center, visit the Norman Palace and its Palatine Chapel, then lose yourself in the colorful atmosphere of the Ballarò and Vucciria markets.

On the fourth day, hit the road to Cefalù, a charming seaside resort dominated by its imposing Norman cathedral. This small town will enchant you with its cobbled streets leading to a sandy beach. Climbing the rock of Cefalù rewards you with a breathtaking view of the Tyrrhenian coast.

Your fifth and sixth days lead you to Trapani and its surroundings. This region is rich in treasures like Erice, a medieval village perched at 750 meters altitude, and the salt pans of Marsala where you can witness spectacular sunsets. The Aegadian Islands, accessible by ferry from Trapani, offer crystal-clear waters perfect for diving.

End this first week by exploring the Zingaro Nature Reserve, a hiker’s paradise with 7 kilometers of coastal trails dotted with coves with turquoise waters. This protected reserve is home to exceptional Mediterranean fauna and flora.

Second week: the east and south of Sicily

Your eighth day marks your arrival in the Catania region, dominated by the majestic outline of Mount Etna. This second largest city in Sicily welcomes you with its Baroque architecture in black volcanic stone. Do not miss the Piazza del Duomo and its Elephant Fountain, the city's symbol.

Ascending Mount Etna is one of the highlights of your trip. This active volcano, rising to 3,357 meters, offers striking lunar landscapes. Several options are available: guided hiking to the craters, cable car for a gentler approach, or a 4x4 excursion on the slopes of the giant.

Taormina, perched on its natural terrace facing the Ionian Sea, will charm you with its ancient Greek theater and terraced gardens. This elegant seaside resort offers an exceptional view of Mount Etna and is a refined stage in your road trip.

Syracuse and its island of Ortygia immerse you in the ancient history of Sicily. The Neapolis archaeological park houses a remarkably preserved Greek theater, while the alleys of Ortygia are full of Baroque palaces and lively squares. The cathedral of Syracuse, built on the remains of an Apollo's temple, perfectly illustrates the island's rich history.

Your last days lead you to Agrigento and its famous Valle dei Templi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These eight Doric temples, including the perfectly preserved Temple of Concordia, testify to the grandeur of Magna Graecia. The proximity of the Scala dei Turchi, a white marl cliff sculpted by erosion, adds a spectacular natural dimension to this region.

Our expert tips for a successful road trip in Sicily

Our Travel Planners, connoisseurs of Sicily, share with you their secrets to transform your trip into an unforgettable experience. Their local expertise opens the doors to an authentic Sicily, away from the beaten path.

  • Prefer small coastal roads over highways to discover breathtaking landscapes. The road along the north coast between Cefalù and Palermo offers exceptional panoramas of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Similarly, the route between Syracuse and Taormina reveals picturesque fishing villages.
  • Adjust your pace to local habits: Sicilians eat late and close their shops in the afternoon. Take advantage of these hot hours to rest or swim, then explore the cities in the late afternoon when the activity resumes.
  • Book your accommodations in historic centers to fully immerse yourself in the Sicilian atmosphere. Sleeping in Palermo in the Kalsa district, in Syracuse on the island of Ortygie, or in Taormina near the Greek theater greatly enriches your experience.
  • Sicilian cuisine deserves special attention. Our Travel Planners guide you to the best family-run trattorias where you can taste authentic specialties. Be sure to try street arancini, pasta with sardines, and finish your meals with a cannolo filled with fresh ricotta.
  • Keep some spontaneity in your itinerary. Sicily is full of local festivals, colorful markets, and village feasts that can enrich your trip in unpredictable ways. Our experts remain at your disposal during your stay to advise you and adjust your program according to your momentary desires.
